Simp Posted October 7, 2008 Posted October 7, 2008 I have a Dick's branded Field and Stream reel that has took a beating this summer with braid, grass, and some big bass. The reel only set me back $50 and it out preformed my Abu Garcias, Diawas, and Phlugger IMHO. Now it's finally giving me some problems that are making me consider just buying another reel to replace it. This brakes my heart because it's been the longest casting, smothest reeling reel I've owned. The problem is now when I'm reeling once in a while the reel wants to stop reeling. To me it feels like it's grinds up against a small rock and stops for a second. I've cleaned the outside of the reel and added some reel oil by the teeth of the reel and it helped some but I'm still having the problem. I'm not to knowledgeable about fixing reels and I'm trying to find out what's the problem and what's needed to fix it. At one point before I cleaned it the reel eyelet would get stuck on the left hand side and didn't want to move. After a long cleaning the reel eyelet moves ok but it still hitches once in a while. Super User .RM. Posted October 7, 2008 Super User Posted October 7, 2008 Simp, At one point before I cleaned it the reel eyelet would get stuck on the left hand side and didn't want to move. After a long cleaning the reel eyelet moves ok but it still hitches once in a while. You need to clean the worm gear, and pawl that drives the (eyelet) line carriage. You need to use a good stiff brush (I use a tooth brush) to scrub that worm gear and the pawl. This should stop the hitch, if it doesn't then you need to use a good eyeglass to scope out the worm gear for damage if it is it will need to be replaced. Now if that is clear then it is time to open the reel up (only if you have the schematic) and check the two white nylon idler gears, one is under the main drive gear and the other is connected to the line carriage worm gear. You will need to check the teeth of these 2 gears to see if any one of them is damaged from when the line carriage jammed to the left. If you find damage the one that has the damage will have to be replaced to get rid of the hitch. If the one that is damaged is the gear connected to the worm gear then the whole worm gear has to be replaced. Hope this helps some, if this is to complicated for you, then I recommend you contact the makers service dept. as per your owners manual. Good Luck & Tight Lines!!!! Quote

The Rooster Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 Hey Simp,You may want to send it to the Reel Mechanic beacuse when you go to repair it you know, if you are like me, you will have some parts left over. ;D I have a buddy who rebuilt a car engine for me once and he had parts left over too. Needless to say, it blew up again in 2 months. : Quote
Simp Posted October 8, 2008 Author Posted October 8, 2008 Hey Simp,You may want to send it to the Reel Mechanic beacuse when you go to repair it you know, if you are like me, you will have some parts left over. ;D That's not a bad idea but the reel was only 50$ and I could still get one for that price. I don't know if it would be cost effective to mail one to be serviced and have it fixed for a fee. The Reel Mechanic seems to sure know his stuff so if I send it to be fixed fee I'd sure send it to him. I've have had the reel less then 6 months so I'm probably covered by some warranty if I can't fix it myself. The only thing I could mention that might help a diagnoses is the reel will make a high picth whine sometimes when you really let loose for a long cast but that's it. I'll make sure to do a good cleaning of the worm gear and pawl again. Thanks for all the help. Quote
Super User .RM. Posted October 8, 2008 Super User Posted October 8, 2008 Simp The high pitched whine you get when casting is coming from the spool and it's support bearings, nowhere else... Also have the manufacturer service the reel and don't you open it up this will nullify the warranty if there is one... Quote
