adclem Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 What does everyone think of the Johnny Morris Signature Series Reel and Rod? They are listed in the fall catalog at a great price, but I can't seem to find much info on either of them. Thanks, Quote
=Matt 5.0= Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 I can only comment on the rods. They are a solid performer in that sale price range. I grabbed mine for $109 on sale in the spring. I wouldn't pay the regular retail for one....just me. Was really impressed with it....then, the tip snapped off while casting a jig. BPS replaced it without the receipt. Then, my partner Rick sets the hook on a nice 4lber and this happens.... Still landed it tho..hand over hand. BPS replaced his as well. Nice rods, perhaps a little brittle due to the "700 million modulous blanks" But they are a good all around rod. Ricks rod snapping 4lber.... Quote
Joe Boss Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 Wow that is some break! On the bright side thats an awesome reel (Daiwa Capricorn) he has on that broken pole. Mines on a St. Croix Triumph and I have set plenty of hooks with no problems. Quote
=Matt 5.0= Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 Bionic hooksets rule! If you look closely, you can see the cut on his face where the rod hit him. Lucky it didn't get him in the eye. That's why I wear sunglasses about 99% of the time. 8-) Quote
BirdNestBen Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 It's a great deal........ that rod is super sensitive, go look for yourself is the best way..... I really like that combo--- especially on sale and BPS stands behind their products.... I guess your talking of the spinning combo which is nice.... but I love the Baitcaster combo much better....... HogHunter Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 I've used both the bait casting and spinning J.M. signature. Love both of them. Really smooth, casts a mile. I've got 4 of the bait casters if that tells you anything. The spinning is excellent as well. Quote
Super User Micro Posted October 2, 2008 Super User Posted October 2, 2008 I have a JM Elite rod (same as Signature but with different guides). It's a 7' MH/F with Recoil guides. I like it plenty. It's very sensitive. I won't buy anymore, though. While it's sensitive, it's not more so than my Fenwick HMGs, which I like a lot better (they are lighter and the grip is more comfortable). I had a JM Elite reel (the blue one) which is a little bit of an upgrade from the Signature (more bearings I think). The reel was excellent. It seemed to be very well made and had an outstandinlgy effective brake. But after 5 months it started to make a squeal that I couldn't get rid of and I suddenly lost casting distance. Never did figure it out, but admittedly I didn't try very hard. I simply took it back to BPS after 5 months and got a refund. In short, I liked the rod and reel. But I have different preferences. But if you like them, I think they will serve you very well. Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted October 2, 2008 Super User Posted October 2, 2008 i will not fish with any other rod than a johnny morris. Quote
adclem Posted October 3, 2008 Author Posted October 3, 2008 Well I got the combo and I have a question. What is up with the line that BPS puts on reels. I have never seen line with such a memory. Just looking at it makes a birds nest.lol Last time I let them spool up a reel for me. Time to spool it up myself. Later, Quote
BirdNestBen Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 Hope you like your purchase....... it's a real quality combo--- I think you'll be real pleased with it....... Did u get the spinning or baitcasting??? Quote
dvdrd423 Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 I HAVE ABOUT 11 COMBOS.I'VE NOT BOUGHT NOTHING ELSE SINCE MY FIRST ONE.ALL OF MINE ARE BAITCAST. Quote
Super User cart7t Posted October 4, 2008 Super User Posted October 4, 2008 I've never used a Morris rod but I've got a pair of the JMX 10HC's reels. Amazing reels. We'll have to see how they hold up but I could see changing to these completely from my Revo's. Quote
Stasher1 Posted October 4, 2008 Posted October 4, 2008 I picked up a leftover '07 model JM Sig. Model 6'6" MH spinning rod a couple weeks ago on clearance at my local BPS. I've only had it out once, but so far I like it. I bought mainly for tossing frogs/toads in heavily weeded areas and have it set up with a Shimano Sahara 4000 and 50# braid, but I think I may wind up downsizing to a 2500 series reel and 30# braid. I just think it would balance better with a lighter reel. Quote
BirdNestBen Posted October 4, 2008 Posted October 4, 2008 I know your gonna love that combo....... that reel and rod is so smooth and light........ they were $199 for the combo when I was in the store a few months ago........ Quote
