Super User Dan: Posted September 27, 2008 Super User Posted September 27, 2008 family guy, if I'm not mistaken, the maintenance port over the gears is for the oil, not grease. If it was for grease why would they make it such a small port? Quote
Super User burleytog Posted September 27, 2008 Super User Posted September 27, 2008 IMO the problems you state present an interesting pattern. Are you using your reels to drive nails or as a bottle opener? You mean I shouldn't use my Curado as a wheel chaulk? :-/ Nope, only Quantums are sturdy enough to drive nails, open bottles and chock wheels. Quote
mike bat Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 I will never buy another shimano product again , a few years back i bought a sustain 2500 fd , it was a nice reel but not worth the 229.00 they get for them. A couple months ago i bought a new stradic fi the first time i nsed it the bail broke so i brought it back and bought a daiwa tierra (nice reel for the money) last night i had a store credit so i thought i'd give shimano another chance , so i bought another stradic fi and right out of the box it's making a grinding noise . I tried oiling i w/ the oil that shimano included w/the reel and it still makes the noise so just to save myself another 60 mi trip back to the store i tried quantum hot sauce reel lube STILL MAKES THE NOISE ! , finally i drove it all the way back to the store and they acknoleged the noise and open the maintence port saw the hot sauce and won't give me my money back or an even exchange because they say by using the quantum hot sauce it broke down the factory lube and that's what's causing the grinding. I'VE HAD IT !!!!! NO MORE SHIMANO AND I'M DONE DEALING W/ THAT STORE TOO !!!!!!!! nothing new here ... it has been known for some time that shimano has had bail issues .... mainly with the bails ... you should send the reel to the reeel mech ... he could clean the hot sauce off the reel and then return the reel to the store ,,, if the hot sause is off they will give you a store credid ... if not send it to shimano with the sales recipt ,.... eighter way you will get a new reel or your money back ... a little word or advice ,, stick with daiwa ,,, if aint broke why fix it ??? : Quote

jjbassjj Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 yeah ive never been too fond of shimano reels(casting). I LOVE their rods though. and BTW the new stradics ( fi ) are crap...... the old white ones are my favorite spinning reels. Quote
wasabi_VA Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 My Shimanos come in clam packs with no instructions, oil or grease. Quote
family guy Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 family guy, if I'm not mistaken, the maintenance port over the gears is for the oil, not grease. If it was for grease why would they make it such a small port? I think the reason they are small is because in japan they sell a grease/oil kit, that have a thin metal tubes(like you get for wd40) that have no problem fitting that small hole, also i had no problem using a swiss army tooth pick to put grease on the gears.also how much bigger could they make it?also too much oil, will break down grease then it goes every where you dont want it to.. just one more thing: i put HS in my stella 4000 fb sent it shimano, they didnt say one word about NOT using it.if it was so bad for the reel ya think they might have said something!because about 7-8 years i had put white lithium grease in my Daiwa Exblem 2500X, got chewed out by some Daiwa tech,NEVER USE THIS GREASE AGAIN! :-[ was the last time i used that grease! Redsyn Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 If I were you I'd send the reel to shimano in Irvine Ca. Tell them exactly what happen and they will make your reel performing like new. I always have great experience w/ Shimano customer service. Make sure you send them a copy of your proof of purchase w/in 1 year so it is under warranty. Or you can sell the reel. I personally love shimano spinning reels and think you should give the sustain another try. Quote
=Matt 5.0= Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 Hot Sauce belongs on Tacos...... ...and maybe an occasional Burrito or Chimichanga Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 If Shimano® wanted that crap used in their reels they would put it in the box... So are you saying that we should only be using the lubes that come with the reels. I am seriously curious about this. Shiamano doesn't give me greese with my reels. My Sustain just came with a small bottle of oil. Is it just Hot Sauce you are against? 1. If they give you oil instead of grease, or visa-versa, it's for a reason. The 2 are not the same and using 1 where the other should be, I would imagine, could cause damage. He's not against Hot Sauce, as long as it's in a QUANTUM ONLY My Shimanos come in clam packs with no instructions, oil or grease. This pertains mainly to the higher end stuff. There are no instructions in any of the packaging but there should definitely have been an exploded diagram which would also have the service and returns info on it. That comes with all of them. Pencil Pusher Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 "He's not against Hot Sauce, as long as it's in a QUANTUM ONLY" Actually, he has stated many times that he hates Hot Sauce and doesn't use it for any thing. Quote

Yet the all knowing MFG only chooses to include oil. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted September 28, 2008 Super User Posted September 28, 2008 Some people make a big enough mess with just oil in the box. I can't imagine the mess that would result if any of the manufacturers included grease as well. Quote
bronzeback01 Posted September 28, 2008 Author Posted September 28, 2008 Every reel i own i've used hot sauce without a problem and that's why i didn't hesitate using it on this reel. Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted September 28, 2008 Super User Posted September 28, 2008 OK you're done with shamino. You are having bad luck with their products. You don't have to justify to us what you did , just go on and buy another companys reels and enjoy. Quote
Super User 5bass Posted September 29, 2008 Super User Posted September 29, 2008 Stupid question but y woldnt u send the reel back to shimano for warranty work..... ....on a BRAND NEW reel that hasn't even been spooled yet? No way I'd send it off for warranty repair. Quote

family guy Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 shimano reels are great, they have a room dedicated to itself on BR, just to find out why this reel or that reel doesnt work right anymore.lucky shimano users! Quote

No way I'd send it off for warranty repair. I agree with this. No way would I buy something brand new and send it out for warranty work and I wouldn't even go as far to even try and grease it either, should preform like brand new from the box, not after you mess with it for a while. I'd go back to the store and swap it out for a Abu Garcia. Quote
fats69 Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 A fishing reel is no damned different than any other product with parts. How many here have bought a car, VCR, DVD recorder and something happened within a few days. Would you say the hell with it and not take care of it cause it's new and you don't want to use warranty work on it!!!! Hey it's your hard earned dollar protect it!!! If the reel is giving you a fit call the STORE MANAGER and no one else and explain what happened. If it works out for you take the reel back and even if you only get an exchange it would be worth it. If they won't take it back, call Shimano first and explain what was going on with it and that the box store (Tell exactly which store it was) wouldn't help you). If they Ok it for return, sometimes they'll send you a pre-paid mailer and send the reel back to them. Irvine office Shimano American Corp. 1 Holland Irvine, CA 92618 On site customer support - Irvine office 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday - Friday Pacific Standard Time Customer Service: 877-577-0600 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday - Friday Pacific Standard Time I sent a TX-120Q reels back to Shimano with a broken frame and explained that I DID IT and just want to pay to repair it. They didn't charge me for it and sent me a brand new reel. Sounds like pretty d**n good customer service to me. On the grease I'll disagree, I use Zebco reel grease on my Shimano's and have never had a problem, it was more of a problem to tray and get their permalube than it was worth. If it works out either way let us know Fatman Quote
