Hey guys i went out last night and i was using my newish rod/reel combo i got at bass pro shops last month. Its one of the graphite series rods with a abu garcia cardinal 100 reel. The same one as in this link: http://www.basspro.c...0003000_100-3-2

Well anyways after awhile of fishing i cast overhead and suddenly my 1 piece rod became a 2 piece rod. Half of the rod flew off, i recovered the other half and i can put it back together and use it like a 2 piece but i was kinda ticked cause i've had it for less than a month and it broke. So this winter i'll be saving up for a few new rods/reels and was wondering what you guys would suggest i've never really had any expensive rods the most i've spent on one was like 60 but i'll be looking to spend around 150. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks,

Dave

That's an odd story.  Sounds like you probably stepped on it before you casted and it was broke already.  For $150.00 i would buy a Shimano Crucial / Compre, G Loomis GL2 or St. Croix Avid.  For a good , cheap spinning reel I would buy a Shimano Sonora or a Daiwa Regal XiA. Each are about 50 bucks.

I never buy "combos" . You always come out better and have a greater selection if you buy rod/reel separate.

I would contact Bass Pro and see about getting it replaced. That way, when you purchase a new setup, you will have two different rods/reels to enjoy.

Any $150 rod is gonna be a good one.

Contact BPS and see what they say.Just be honest and tell them what happened. They might replace it for you.

I broke a BPS rod a couple of years ago that was a year + old.  When I contacted them about it they offered to credit me the purchase price towards any new rod.  So I up graded for a few dollars. ;D

Give them a call you have nothing to lose.

Not trying be a smat a.. here, but you said you could "put it back together and use it like a 2 piece rod". Are you saing the rod did not snap in two but separated into two pieces? I looked at the link you provided and a number of those rods are two piece. If the rod was assembled when you bought the combo, you may have picked up a two piece rod by mistake. I have been buying rods for over forty years and just recently bought an ultralight rod off the rack that I thought was one piece and found out later when I was stringing it that it was in fact a two piece; the ferule just looked like part of the wrap.

Wow that's horrible, but one thing that I can't seem to picture in my head...

How is it that the rod broke but you're still able to put it back together and use it like a 2 piece? What connects one half with another? I've broken rods before and there's no possible way that I'd be able to put the two pieces back together and continue using. Are you sure the rod wasn't a 2 piece to begin with?

edit: looks like Pencil Pusher beat me to it!

If it broke and you did nothing wrong why wouldn't you immediately not think of taking it back?

If you think it was a fluke then exchange, if you think its junk then get a refund.

I just posted not long ago about what I just recently found out about BPS's rod warranty. Check this thread out on my post
