Super User Tin Posted September 24, 2008 Super User Posted September 24, 2008 I really like Loomis'drop-shot rod (6'10" spinning) and it's pretty much all I have been using. But I really don't want to drop 250 on another. The Carrot and Croix rod's were a little too stiff for my liking. Has anyone used the Loomis and say the Crucial or another brand drop-shot rod. I'm looking for a back-up that is close to the Loomis but don't feel like dropping that much money. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted September 24, 2008 Super User Posted September 24, 2008 Have you looked at the Kistler KDSS69 or St. Croix AVS69MLXF, at $150 and $170 respectively? I didn't find the Avid too stiff at all - maybe you want a slower taper like a fast or moderate? I know a few guys using parabolic rods for DS in DEEP open water. Not my cup o' tea Quote
Super User islandbass Posted September 24, 2008 Super User Posted September 24, 2008 Look at the Lamiglas Drop Shot Special (either I or II). Lamiglas is so underrated. They make great rods. I have the DS I and can vouch for it. The I has a Moderate Fast action and the II is the one for deeper water and therefore has a touch more power, sports a fast or extra fast action. I can't recall for certain, but it is not moderate fast like the I. If I went outside of Lamiglas, I wouldn't mind checking out the Shimano DS rods. Quote
Bassyak Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 I have a Crucial 7'2 ML with Extra-Fast tip dropshot spinning rod and I really like it, though I'm just getting into dropshotting and haven't caught a lot of fish with it yet, much less any of decent size (I'm hoping to correct that situation this weekend at Lake Washington). It has a very soft, sensitive tip that's perfect for lightweight dropshotting rigs, but if you use more than about 1/4oz (the upper end of the rating) of weight, the tip will get overloaded rather quickly. Now that I've used it for a little bit, I would probably prefer the M over the ML, but I'll stick with this one for a little longer before I look into swapping them out. But I really like the split grip with plenty of contact with the blank and think the Crucials are a great class of rod altogether ( I also have the 7' M non-dropshot spinning rod and managed to haul a nice 5.5 lb LM out of some lilypads with it). Redsyn Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 I seriously consider the crucial dropshot rod. I ended up w/ a loomis d/s rod instead just because the handle felt more comfortable. You can get a loomis d/s non glx for around 180 new online or if you know a tackle shop that gives discount. May I ask why do you need(want) another d/s rod for? If I were you I'd rather get another rod for another application. Quote
Super User Tin Posted September 25, 2008 Author Super User Posted September 25, 2008 I want an extra so if it's windy and I'm getting blown off a spot and have to break off I can just grab my other one, or I will have them set up with differen lenth leaders/weights. I always have more than one of whatever is working best. If I have a good jig bite going, I will go out with 4 MH rods with jigs tied on. Maybe the trailers will differ or the weight. But I just hate to have to re-tie things. I like to be able to just put the rod downd grab another. Quote
Redsyn Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 Ok I hear you. The drop shot rig does take a little longer to retie. Quote
Super User Tin Posted September 26, 2008 Author Super User Posted September 26, 2008 Yup, and I use a swivel 3' above so it can ugly. Quote
Jacob0434 Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 I picked up a 7FT. Rogue dropshot rod awhile ago here in utah for a $149.00. All I can say is it's freakin' awesome. Very sensitive and the recoil guides are pretty cool. So I guess what I'm trying to say is if you can find one on sale don't hesitate to get it. Jacob Quote

franklinfishfinder Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 I own the kistler magnesium 6'9" drop shot rod ( spinning ) awsome rod can't say enough about it. and for $175 i feel like it is an awsome rod for the money. plus with the 2009 models coming out and being only $150 the 2008 models should go on sell and be dirt cheap if you can wait till around november. =Matt 5.0= Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 Okay okay! Fine! I'll finally buy that Crucial that we were both looking at! Maybe I'll let you borrow it once in a while since you were generous enough to lend me the Tracker for the day. Oh wait, I was saving for that 8'6" Premier surf rod...... Quote
