BirdNestBen Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 Just about to buy a new baitcaster in a few days for all around fishing... flukes, worms, spinnerbaits, crankbaits, etc. Have been looking at a Revo Stx, but highly regard everyone's opinions, so wanted to see what you guys might recommend.... Thanks and good fishin' Quote
The_Natural Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 I'd get a Citica, Curado, or Daiwa Advantage, but I'm not a Revo fan. Quote
lubina Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 Revo SX or Daiwa TD Advantage 153HST Quote
Super User Sam Posted September 20, 2008 Super User Posted September 20, 2008 BCH, When considering a new baitcasting reel please consider the type (low profile); the power (5:1, 6:1 or 7:1) depending on the type of fishing you will do with the reel; the highest line test it can handle; and the brand. As long as you go with a name brand you will not have any problems with the reel. What you have to decide is what you want the reel to do (winch fish out of cover and structure; long casts for treble hook baits; fish plastics; pitching and flipping; etc.) and then try to find a reel that will meet your needs. With the new Hanover BPS opening you may find a good reel on sale at other BPS locations in celebration of the new BPS opening. Shimano, Flooger, Diawa are all good reels and as long as you treat them well they will perform for you for many, many years. Quote
Super User Muddy Posted September 20, 2008 Super User Posted September 20, 2008 Cabelas currently is running the Pflueger President , normally sells for 140 is selling at 109. You asked for 150, so thats why I out up the President, I like the Trions at 100 nd that will leave you some change Quote
Super User Micro Posted September 20, 2008 Super User Posted September 20, 2008 Have been looking at a Revo Stx, No need to look any further. 1 Quote
Super User Jeff H Posted September 20, 2008 Super User Posted September 20, 2008 Revo SX or Daiwa TD Advantage 153HST Exactly what I would have said. I guess if you can get a STX for $150 that's a better way to go. Quote
Super User firefightn15 Posted September 20, 2008 Super User Posted September 20, 2008 Can't knock any of the reels for that price, but in that area I like my revo sx. Quote
SoCalRob Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 Shimano Citica E or Revo STX...depending on your budget. The Citica is silky smooth like your woman's legs after she shaves ;D Quote
catchnm Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 Curado E series, E5 and E7, new for 2009 are going for $159.99 shipped on Ebay. Quote
adclem Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 I really like the Citica and for the price you can't beat it. Just my $.02 Later, Quote
BirdNestBen Posted September 21, 2008 Author Posted September 21, 2008 well thanks guys for all your help and opinions..... my fav reel is definitely the SHIMANO MG 50... WOW but over my budget...... One mentioned the Pflueger president reel and I have one of those in a spinning reel....... nice- truth is I catch most of my fish on it........ And I like the Daiwa Zillion the most of all the models they have out now.... but very pricey........ So, really think I'll go with the Revo Stx.... went and tried it at Academy and felt super smooth...... I think I can find one in my range if I keep a lookout...... thanks.......... Quote
Super User Micro Posted September 21, 2008 Super User Posted September 21, 2008 You won't regret the STX. It doesn't take a backseat to any other LP reel. Quote
BirdNestBen Posted September 21, 2008 Author Posted September 21, 2008 thanks micro....... can't wait to get it out on the lake...... love to fish flukes, senkos, etc. on spinning tackle but gonna switch and start using this reel for that....... Been running into some BIG BASS lately that just have flat out overpowered me....... put some good line on this one and maybe I can start to win a few battles I hope....... thanks again Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted September 21, 2008 Super User Posted September 21, 2008 Well, it sounds like you have made up your mind, but since you haven't bought the reel yet, I'll throw this into the mix: The STX has magnetic brakes which I don't like at all. I have heard these will be replaced with a centrifugal braking system on future models. I have had the STX since March and fished it extensively. I am currently having it serviced by Reel Mech, so perhaps I'll like it better, but I think there are much better options at your pricing point. Of all the reels I own, the STX is my least favorite. Odd, the folks at Abu Garcia haven't heard that rumor. First off, RW fishing something other than a "Shimano"...........What that the fudge (only I did'nt say fudge.)! I thought you practiced what you preached? Guess not. Second, I have heard no rumors either, why change anything on the best selling/performing reel of the past 2 years. Quote

I thought you practiced what you preached? Guess not. Give the guy a break. The STX was a gift and he's doing his best not seem ungrateful about it. If he had won it in a raffle he'd probably have sold it unused but his situation is a bit more tense than that. At least he has some morals in the dept of received gifts and has fished with it whether he actually likes it or not. Quote

I have nothing but respect for RW, he gives solid advise and handles this site like a pro! As for you, I do'nt know you and don't ever remember you so step back........Even if you are the one to give him this fantastic reel!!! Quote
Super User Jeff H Posted September 21, 2008 Super User Posted September 21, 2008 Hey there Mr Significant..... I didn't give it to him. Glenn did. Quote

Super User Muddy Posted September 21, 2008 Super User Posted September 21, 2008 Rumor has it that RW has a Flooger some where in his house also : Quote
Super User Jeff H Posted September 21, 2008 Super User Posted September 21, 2008 Well then congrats to Glenn for trying to sway him from just one brand. Signed, Mr Significant........ Yep, can't say he didn't try. If it can't be done with a Revo, it ain't gonna be done at all. I've been a Shimano guy for many years myself but I sure do like the Revo's now too. Quote

A couple of my buddies swear by them, I have yet to buy one. I am hung up on my Johnny Morris, 50MG and President reels. But the next purchase will be a toss up between a Zillion or STX. Quote
