I own a few Daiwa Capricorn (silver) baitcasters that were on clearance.  I think one $60 and the others were $40.  I have two TD-X HSDL flipping reels that I got used in EC for $40 each.  I also have three Daiwa Capricorn XTC spinning reels (orange) at $60 each that have served me well.

I have also owned a Quantum Accurist that fell apart after a year.  Two $80 spinning reels needed roller bearings replaced after one year, not acceptable.  However my 12 year old Quantum IR3 round BC is actually better than brand new, mechanically, after being cleaned and rebuilt every year.

I have a Shimano Stadic, an older model with a wood handle that was a steal at $70 that has been great for two years.  Another oddball are two 20 year old Zebco "33" that still work great.  Yearly maintenance on those probably didn't hurt.

Some companies have good products, and sometimes they make a dud.  Its hard to determine if the dud is poor design/cheap components/poor quality control or just a "Monday morning car."

Lately, I've been buying higher end gear.  And I feel it is much the same.  Some are worth it, some aren't.

As far as my recommendation for <$100 reel?  Look for a TD-A on ebay or in the clearance bin.

I have two Ambassadeur 4600s, an Ambassadeur 5600, a Daiwa Advantage, and a Shimano Curado 201BSF that I bought for under $100 each.  I really like all these reels, and would recommend them to anybody.

They are not as nice as my Curado D's or Calcuttas but they are solid reels.  PLus, I can beat up on them and not feel too bad.

The Bass Pro Shops Extreme has got to be one of the best deals anywhere for under $100, they're only just $80 retail.  You can find them on sale sometimes for under $60.  I actually paid less than $50 for mine due to a clearance on them but I got the 5 bearing model when they replaced it with the 7 bearing model instead.  These are great reels and have a lot of features that others only have after you cross the $100 line such as an aluminum frame.  I've seen some reels that cost under $100 and still have that but none of them feel as smooth as the Extreme does, not to me anyway.

I bought the Quantum Lone Star baitcasting combo from Academy.  Bought it for $40 (normally sells for $50).  I love it.  It's not as smooth as my buddies Daiwa but it gets the job done just fine for me.  I've caught a few 5 pounders on it and it handled well.  MH rod 6'6" 2 barrings.  I have it spooled with some cheap 12lb line and backlashes are pretty minimal and most of the time my fault.

All of my reels were under $100.00

3 Curado 201B's, 1 Revo S-L, 1 Garcia 5501, and a butt load of older Quantum QG3501 Competitions.

I like um all........

Tight Lines!!!  :(

i have  a quantum kvd BC that is nothing short of awesome. i got it on sale for $80.

quantum incyte spinning reel that i got 2 years ago for $70. it is the best reel i  have ever owned.

diawa 100h that is solid and strong and smooth and it  was $80.

i have little to no plans to buy a reel over $100  anytime soon unless  its a saltwater accurist.

u can do  great things with $100 if you look around. :(

I have a silver Capricorn baitcaster and an orange one. They were both good at first, but after about a year or so of use, they have become loose and the thumb bar release doesn't stay down half the time, often resulting in casts that make it about halfway out, grind to a halt, and scare the crap out of me  ;D The drags and gears are fine though, so I still use them. Looking to upgrade as soon as I have the funds.

Mine have seen one to three seasons, and they work better than new.  You might want to reassess your maintenance schedule.  The oldest reel is actually the smoothest reel in the bunch - smoother than a Sol that recently super tuned.
