Well  - I've been reading about these amazing G Loomis GLX's for so long now that I finally broke down and bought one.  A BSR803 GLX for my soft plastics.  I paried it up with a stradic 2500 fh and headed out last night.

A little background for you on my other rods so you'll know what i'm comparing to...i have 2 avid spinning rods one in medium fast and 1 in mh fast. i also own one a carrot stix spinning rod, 1 st. croix elite casting and 2 st. croix tournament casting rods.  (among many others that aren't worth listing)

from what i've read (and i've read everything I could find) the glx's were supposed to be "on another level" when it came to sensitivity so I had very high expectations.  The rod didn't knock my socks off when i got it out on the water.  now don't get me wrong - it is superbly built, super light, feels great in my hand and handled all the fish i managed to trick into biting (including a 3 1/2 pounder) but TO ME it wasn't sooo much better than even the avids when it came to sensitivity.  I don't want to get anyone stirred up on here cause i know we have some very loyal and serious fans, but i just wanted to post my impressions of the vaunted GLX.  Now the real questions:

am i happy with my purchase - absolutely

will i keep the rod? - definitely

Would i buy more GLX's - Nope - unless i got them at an unbelieveable deal ($200 or less)

Well, after you fish it a month or two, I suspect your appreciation will grow.

Although I own three Avids and two Legend Elites, they do not compare

favorably to my (2) GLX.

The catch of what you 've read is that you haven 't read somebody telling the other side of the story, everybody says GLXs are great, I have no reason to doubt it, why ? because everybody is different and as there are people able to detect the difference there are others who can 't detect it ( like me ), other than a slight weight difference I can 't feel the difference in "sensitivity" between a GLX and an IMX.

You can run all the tests you want, you can test which blank is capable physically of transmitting the most vibrations through it, that is something that can be quantified but it can 't be qualified, sensitvity, the capability of physically feeling those vibrations the blank is transmitting is limited by the user 's perception of them, sensitivity is subjective.

Very well put!!!!!!!!!!!

I bought this exact rod recently for 220$ and i think its a great deal in that price range.  I would however not be as impressed if I bought it for $355(or whatever they're charging).  Personally I'm quite satisfied with what it does for me. Its a finesse rod, so I use it for the lighter applications that require a little more sensitivity. I also have a st croix legend tournament 7ft med/fast to throw almost everything else I use.  IMO my legend tournament can do what the glx does, but the glx is better at what it does.

My philosophy with high end rods (I use Kistler Helium 2 and GLX) is that you pay alot more for a little better.

IMHO these are not the best "value" rods.  I think you get a lot more bang for your buck in the $100-$150 price range.

I use 'em, and love 'em...but only because I have slowly built up a collection of them one rod at a time...over a loooong time.  if I had a lump sum of cash and started over, I'd probably start with rods in teh $100-$150 range and get that value and them upgrade from there as I could afford it.

That's exactly how I feel.  Well said!

I am with you !!! Even better if you can get them in clearance or a good sale ...

Yeah, but do loomis's EVER go on sale? :)

They do on this website quite a bit.  But other than that...nope.

I just cannot justify buying one (well, paying retail for one).  Maybe if I ever start making money I might actually think harder about it but they cannot be 250 to 300 dollars better than everything I have ever used.  I actually got the chance to fish a 6'6" medium IMX (which a lot of people claim to be no different sensitivity wise than GLXs and I was not that impressed, honestly) I don't care what anyone says, after a while you are just paying for a name...

i want to try a loomis glx ,, but after the frog rod i purchased ,, no way ... i dont want anything to do with loomis ... not bashing them ,, just dont feel they have what im looking for .. i know they have a cult following .. but to be honist i really never see anyone fishing a loomis any loomis for that matter ... ill stick to my ol st croix they are fine for me ... i may add a few zillion rod to my arsonal ...  ;D

The new Zillions look real nice. The one thing I never connected is why more pros aren't using G-Loomis....and I know how sponsorship works but still, if they are supposed to be the be all end all rod and if they really offered a significant advantage over other brands like Falcon, Quantum (at least a dozen pros use these), St. Croix, and all those other brands, I think pros would use them more...Hell, one of the better pros on tour these days, Edwin Evers, uses Bass Pro Shops Pro Qualifiers and judging from the replies I have read here, those rods garbage. If G-Loomis were truly leaps and bounds better than everything else wouldn't professional fisherman use them regardless of sponsorship...especially when each tourney really does mean getting paid or not.

In my opinion, rods are just like everything else in fishing...there are so many quality brands out there it all comes down to preference. Just like when deciding between an Owner or a Gammy, P-Line or Yo-Zuri, or a Shimano or an Abu.

I've been contemplating going all st. croix or to pick up some zillions. Either way I'm selling my GLX.

i prefer my glx over my avid. is it worth the extra money? that depends on who you ask. for me, sure. just skip a couple happy hrs and use the money saved to cover the difference. i cant skip those though. i just took it as a loss :)

When a company consistantly produces high quality,

dependable equipment that withstands the test of time,

they create a "reputation".  So, what's in a name?

Perhaps the comfort of knowing that you will receive

exactly what you pay for.

ive read a few reviews where the new zillions are being compaired to the loomis glx ... i geuss the new zillions have a real fast taper ... to me this sounds like a killer jig / t-rig/ worm rod ... i just have to try one ... and with the price in mind they dont seem bad at all ... i also have 3 zillion reels that would love a new home found on a zillion rod ...

the pro qualifier is far from garbage.

Until about 2002 i was all Loomis all the time, i thought they were the end all. And, they truly are great rods! Ive had a few IMX's and had a GLX SB rod and a GLX jig/worm rod. Both were great, but now that i have branched out i personally feel that the cumaras i have now are more sensitive and lighter that the GLX's and I like the powells i have just as much. Like mentioned before though, it all comes down to preference......but bait monkey wants STEEZ!

Thers a couple places on ebay you can buy on sale, OhYaSales is one but be careful, email them 1st and make sure they have the rod advertised in stock(happened to me) and the other is SimmonsSportingGoods(where I got mine) both offer free shipping on select models and have Great prices, Simmons will match anybody.

I've fished with BPS rods for several years and until I held a G.Loomis rod in my hand and fished with it, I would've never thought I'd pay that kind of money for a single rod, but I'll tell you this, theres NO turning back now. I love the way my Loomis rods feel over any BPS rod I've ever owned. But I wont call them garbage, they served me well, many fish over.

IMO, the $150 price point of fishing rods is about as good as you're going to get.  Going beyond that and you're just not going to see a return on the money spent.

All Star Platinums

Falcon Cara's

Shimano Crucial's

Quantum PT Tours

Fenwick Techna AV's

are just a few really great rods in that price point.  It would be impossible to say that a rod that costs over twice the price of any of those would be worth that price in either sensitivity or construction.

Not even close really.

Well, I did say that the list was just a few.   :)

Yes, the Avids are a part of that list as well.
