Line question mono, braid, or fluro????

hey guys just picked up the new curado I put it on a jig/worm pole..I threw some berkley vanish on it 12lb test...what a mistake i hate it backlashes all the time, very short casts,etc. just looking for some advice on which line a should use...I have powerpro(12lb diameter/50lb) on my curado 300 and I love the stuff but I also only use that pole for heavy cover...this pole i am using light worms and jigs figured i should use some sort of a fluro or should i just use a lighter power pro braid...any help would be great thanks guys!

I like the way braid feels and if your not fishing clear water I'd use it. With that said light baits usually work best with light line. I've used the 20lb braid with a 6lb diameter on a baitcaster and I don't recommend it ;D (backlashes).

I understand your frustration so may I offer the following?

When spooling your baitcasters run the line through Kevin VanDam's Lure and Line Conditioner and then spray the line on the spool every so often as you spool your reel. This helps make any line easier to use.

Take a washcloth and spray a "wet spot" on the washcloth and run the line through the wet spot as you spool the line onto your reel.

Did you leave about an eighth of an inch from the top of the spool?  Baitcasters are designed to cast best when the spool is full up to about one-eight inch from the top.

What are the line paramaters of your rod and do they match your line test?  Remember, the rod gives you the best set-ups for that specific rod regarding line test and bait weight.   Check it out.

Did you balance your bait with your reel?  Did you point the rod tip to 11 o'clock and let the bait drop to the floor, slowly, without any backlashes?  And after than, set your drag and then do it all over again?  You always need to balance your lure and spool to balance it.

Did you turn off any magnets?  Check the magnets and make sure all are off.

And how long is your rod?  Six foot-six inches?  Six-ten? Seven feet?  Rod length makes a world of difference when casting.  If you balance the line test and lure weight then the rod should cast your line properly.

I have no problems with my Curado 100s, 200s and 7:1 ratio baitcasters using either flouro or mono lines.  I do not go over 17 pounds as a personal rule for baitcasters and will use braid when appropriate on the 200s.

I usually use 12-pound test as that is all you need to land any bass of the size that you usually catch.

If you check your rod's specifications; balance your lure to your baitcaster setup; and treat your line with KVD conditioner (or a pure silicone spray) when spooling you should not have any problems with any line you throw.

Do you use your thumb to feather down the spool as the bait approaches the water?  When throwing buzzbaits, do you actuall start reeling before the lure hits the water?  Slowing the lure before it hits the water is something that you need to practice to avoid backlashes.

If you continue to have problems, even when you use your thumb to slow down the lure as it approaches the water's surface, then consider going outside and cast the lure as far as possible.

After you cast the lure as far as possible, pull two or three arm-lenghts of line off the reel and place Scotch Tape over the remaining line.  This will stop all backlashes from going any deepter than the Scotch Tape.

If all this fails, stick with spinning reels.  ;D   ;D   ;D

Sam is right and gave very good info. But i know from experience  the line your using sucks. i bought it as well cause i found it on clearance at k-mart it wasn't even worth the lousy 4bucks i paid. I'm a braided guy. I use braided on every pole i own. 20lbs PowerPro. in dark green. and it does very well in clear water as well.  I have tried to do many tips to make that vanish work but its just horrible in my opinion and does not cast far at all either.. line can be a really iffy thing took me awhile to find the kind i like best. hope this helps.

when you guys use braid, do you use a mono leader?  or do you just tie right on?  I only use braid right now for musky, and they def aren't line shy.....but wasn't sure about LM...

I use mono for topwater, 12lb mono for heavy cover, and floro for everything else. Every braid I have tried on my baitcasters never goes more than twenty feet before backlashing. I would reccomend BPS floro for everything but topwater. It costs a little more than mono, and most braided lines.

see my braided PowerPro on my bait caster can cast beyond long with no backlash EVER.  I'm not saying you don't know what your doing but are you sure its lined right with the specs of the reel.  and be sure its the right lbs for that reel. and no to who ever asked i usually straight braided no leader of any kind.. and i either use yellow which i draw black lines in with a sharpie marker to make very well visible or i use dark green. and Power Pro only.

I have Power Pro braid on my BC 50lbs(12lbs equivalent)and I can cast it a long long long ways with no backlash at all.  I am using a Shimano Citica 201D with a BPS Rick Clunn 6' 6"  MH/F rod.

Love this stuff.  It will get lures back from being stuck where mono would just snap.

But on the subject what does everyone prefer for mono(brand) and for fluorocarbon(brand)?

I tried braid on my Quantum baitcaster, and hated it so decided to only use braid on Spinning Reels. As far as brands go for braid I use 20# Hi-Vis Yellow Power Pro, for mono I use Sufix Seige, and I never really tried fluoro.

While fishing weightless plastics I've never so much as gotten a bite when using braid (#30 fireline in smoke color, #12 diameter). The water I fish is stained/clearish with 2-3ft visibility. The second I change over to my spinning setup with #6 Yo-Zuri Hybrid Ultra-Soft mono/fluoro I'll be pulling in fish left and right. I don't know what it is but maybe the fish are line shy round these parts. I really enjoy the braid but I've given up on using it for anything but frog fishing mats and pads.
