fishbear Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 I am going to give this a try, have a med. fast casting rod on the way, and have 2 diff. reels to try for throwing lightweight lures and plastics. 1. Daiwa Procaster 2. Abu Black Max are the reels I have for this.... Which one would work best and what line? I was thinking 20 lb. braid with a fluorocarbon leader. Quote
Super User Raul Posted August 16, 2008 Super User Posted August 16, 2008 None of those reels performs well for lightweight stuff. And a weightless senko can hardly qualify as a "light" bait, ok ? : Quote
fishbear Posted August 16, 2008 Author Posted August 16, 2008 Raul, I was not just thinking senkos, but also splitshot/mojo rigs with finesse worms, 1/4 oz spinnerbaits, weightless flukes, etc.... Quote
Stasher1 Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 I've got four of the older Procasters and of the four of them, two of them (Procaster Rojo & Capricorn 100XTC) do poorly with weightless plastics but do okay with T-rigged worms and weighted soft plastics. The last two were bought used, on Ebay. One is an immaculate Procaster 6+1 (AKA Procaster 100H) that's been babied, cleaned, and properly lubed. It casts like a dream and would probably do very well with weightless/lightweight plastics. The other (Capricorn 100H) had been used, abused, and neglected. I've never even bothered to put line on this one. It's my "parts reel". So, what I'm trying to say is this: I don't know. :-/ Spool them both up with the same line and head out to the lake/pond and give them a try. It only takes a minute or two to swap reels. Quote
fishbear Posted August 16, 2008 Author Posted August 16, 2008 I was actually thinking about doing that, but wanted some "expert" advice from all of you first..... Hey Stasher, you are not all that far from me,,,, you fish varner? Tribble Mill? Charlie Elliott? Quote
Stasher1 Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 I live about 12 miles from Tribble and 8 miles from Stone Mountain, so I usually bounce between the two. Fished Tribble yesterday morning for a few hours. It's much, much better during the week than it is on the weekends. Quote
Super User Raul Posted August 16, 2008 Super User Posted August 16, 2008 Raul,I was not just thinking senkos, but also splitshot/mojo rigs with finesse worms, 1/4 oz spinnerbaits, weightless flukes, etc.... 1/4 oz spinnerbaits are not exactly "light" either, a 1/4 oz spinnerbait 's real weight is over 3/8 oz. When I say "performs well" I don 't mean that it can 't cast the rig/bait, I mean the reel is not capable of making the rig/bait fly away easily, with little effort and with good distance. Can those reels cast the rigs and baits you have in mind ? yes they can if you impart them a good ammount of shoulder grease, set your brakes at near zero and loosen your tension knob all the way down barely tight enough to avoid the spool from rubbing against the frame plus some impressive thumb control and after all that the bait will fly 15 yards. Too much effort for such a poor perfomance. I do know very well the Procaster, it 's an excellent heavy duty reel for the money but I wouldn 't use it for lightweight stuff, there are much better reels for that purpose, but of course, those reels cost good money. But it 's your money not mine. Quote

I was having a problem the other evening throwing 3'' Rapalas I think I just need to add some more break in the cast. But I cast weightless plastics, topwater, and jigs just fine with my set up. I have a BPS Xstreme on a Allstar I use Cabelas pro line which is mono at 10ld. I think this is the way to start out it worked for me. I don't really try anything else b/c this is working and the man who taught me knows his stuff. So good luck and enjoy I know the feeling of getting a new combo. Enjoy and keep fishing. Quote

Man i dont think you have a chance casting 3 inch raps, you must know something i don't know because a weightless plastic that people claim that they can launch a mile ex trick worm does'nt work out on any of my baitcasters. Quote
Sharkbite Posted August 17, 2008 Posted August 17, 2008 I can cast a 5'' weightless trick stick almost the same distance I can on a spinning set up. The Rapalas have been a struggle to be honest. With the trick sticks I go higher on the tension control. This is the only way I can cast them weightless. At first I was a mess backlash every time but I kept at it like the guy's said and it worked. I still get backlash and birds nest but not as much. Quote
Super User Muddy Posted August 17, 2008 Super User Posted August 17, 2008 2 favorite combos for lite stuff and plastics, both with 10# Cabelas ProLine Mono 1. Cabelas Fish Eagle II 6'6" Med/fast & BPS Extreme ETX05HB 2.Fenwick HMX 6'6" Med/Fast & Pflueger Trion LPNS no problems, any backlash is always my fault and it is minimal at this point That is an excellent tip from Gene, come to think about it I use more line hanging off the rod with lighter baits Quote
fishbear Posted August 17, 2008 Author Posted August 17, 2008 I was planning on using 20 lb. Suffix Performance Braid, it casts great and is the same diameter of 8 lb. I am going to start with that, and then if I need to, switch to mono. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted August 17, 2008 Super User Posted August 17, 2008 ya need the p i x i e, yes that's the reel for me it thorws the light stuff like a dram saw jimzee thowing a psitshot rig trickworm 2night using it trwoing as far as id do with a spinner Quote
fatmanslim247 Posted August 17, 2008 Posted August 17, 2008 I'm using the cheaper version of the diawa viento, with a light action fenwick hmx... it does great, plus the rod, to me anyways, feels to have more back bone then some of my mediums. I can throw a 3 inch senko with no problem, actually that primarily what i use this setup for. hope this helps Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted August 19, 2008 Super User Posted August 19, 2008 I don't use baitcasting gear for any lure lighter than 3/8 of an ounce. Quote
