Baitcaster Question

Hey how is everyone?

Just wondering if you have a baitcaster and a spinning reel. Both on the same rod, and same line, same lure.   Which one would you be able to cast further with?

Baitcaster by far, as long as you're good with it.

Thanks for the reply. Im now learning how to use a baitcaster, I thought it would be a spinning reel, just due to how the line comes off with nothing holding it back.

Not really an answer to your question but accuracy is a lot more important than distance and WELCOME to the forums!!!

Yeah i agree with the post above me, when you know where they are, accuracy is much more important than distance. 8-)

I agree, im not even trying to cast far at the moment, just trying to get nice and accurate casts.  Im just asking because I fish from shore 99.9% of the time and somtimes I need a long cast to get into the deep waters

oo k, well then just keep using the baitcaster, and you'll get some really good distance

I think I'd go far enough to say it depends on what baitcaster it is.  A cheapo one with poor build quality won't let the spool free spin as fast as might be necessary to cast great distances.  I have an old Quantum EX250 with 2 bearings only that won't cast as far as other reels with more bearings.  I think it's because it doesn't have any ball bearings on the spool shaft, just brass bushings only.  It'll cast a reasonable distance but it has to be a 1/4 oz. lure or heavier.  I can out throw it with my BPS Extreme, hands down, and it does have bearings on the spool shaft.

Comparable rods will cast exactly the same distance,

baitcasting or spinning. Accuracy is exactly the same

when either style set-up has been mastered. I fish both styles

and like them equally, but I have a strong preference for one

over the other for certain techniques.

The World Record casting distance is held by a spinning rod.

I've got one of the new quantum Touring baitcasters. Its pretty good, nice and smooth.. 11 bearings.   But my spinning is an Abu garcia, I forgot the model but I cast pretty darn far with it! I mastered that already, now I'm onto baitcasters. =)

With baitcasters it's not really about distance. In my own amateur/humble opinion it's about " accuracy,lure placement, and line control" when using a baitcaster.

As a lifelong spinning reel fisherman who made himself learn to use a baitcaster this summer. It might seem easier to cast farther on a spinning reel of comparative cost than a baitcaster. That's only because you can get a quality spinning reel for $59 dollars while you don't seem to seem to scratch the surface of quality baitcaster until you start to reach the $100 pricepoint.
