Low_Budget_Hooker Posted July 28, 2008 Posted July 28, 2008 It's like this,........ I've been throwing a swimbait, MS Slammer, nonstop for about a month now. Last night I was playing with some experimental home made versions, testing, etc. The water flattened and the skies started to clear, no shot at a swimbait bite,.....so what now? I have only been fishing the conducive hours for swimbaiting,....night time and foul weather days, but here I am, faced with the old stuff,....normal weather, lol. So I pick up the "spare" rod I bring, the one Flechero made me. This is a relatively light rod, but not a true "lightweight" like a Steez, Croix, Helium, etc It IS now!! lol After throwing a huge wooden swimbait on a saltwater boat rod for a month, this thing almost floated out of my hand! I felt like I was holding some delicate surgical instrument all of a sudden. So, I guess what I am saying is,....is it all relevant? What would feel "light" to someone who only has top notch, lightweight gear? Once they are "used to" the weight of what they have,.....it becomes "the norm" instead of "light" I have no clue what my point is here,...just felt like typing, lol. Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted July 28, 2008 Super User Posted July 28, 2008 I just got a rod that feels really light... USPS just gave me a Crucial stick. No idea where it came from, but it is niiiiiiiiiiiiice. : Good morning!!! Quote
Daniel My Brother Posted July 28, 2008 Posted July 28, 2008 I was expecting to see you holding a rod with the top 75% broken off! ;D BTW I agree, heavy and light are relative terms. Quote

Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted July 28, 2008 Super User Posted July 28, 2008 LOL, I hear the water is nice in RI this time of year. Gary? Who are you expecting to show up? My name has been Wayne for 28 years LOL Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted July 28, 2008 Super User Posted July 28, 2008 Call me whatever you like, just not "late for dinner!" I know saltwater gear can be very heavy, but for the most part, freshwater equipment is more about "balance" than gross weight. I don't really notice much difference between my "light" and "heavy" stuff. Even at my age, +/- 8 ounces isn't an issue, but I do have a preference for 12 oz in a can! : Quote
Super User flechero Posted July 28, 2008 Super User Posted July 28, 2008 the one Flechero made me. At that point I began to squirm... I thought you were going to say you threw the slammer on it and broke it. It wouldn't have been so far fetched with you!! ;D Dude, don't scare me like that!! Quote

Super User firefightn15 Posted July 28, 2008 Super User Posted July 28, 2008 Ditto on the broken rod! Sorry Russ, that's just what came to mind. ;D Quote
AnthonyRSS Posted July 28, 2008 Posted July 28, 2008 +/- 8 oz on a rod+reel is the proverbial ton. I like the lightest stuff just because, although most of the stuff I use isn't particularly light. Anthony Quote
Super User Dan: Posted July 28, 2008 Super User Posted July 28, 2008 So Russ, you are basically describing muscle memory if I understand you correctly? It's the same reason why baseball players use heavier bats or donut weights while in the on-deck circle? Quote
bpm2000 Posted July 28, 2008 Posted July 28, 2008 my rig on a usual outing is 3-4 swimbait rods and a UL rod (for panfish). Its quite the shock going from the swimbait rod to the UL - i know exactly what u mean. The water flattened and the skies started to clear, no shot at a swimbait bite,.....so what now? keep throwing a swimbait ;D maybe a different one? outside the box man! Quote

It's the same reason why baseball players use heavier bats or donut weights while in the on-deck circle? Yes. Same reason I used to ski my warm up runs on 220cm low profile tip Downhill skis. I would then do the real runs with a 190cm, foam core ski. (and people thought I was nuts bringing a DH ski into a 50-60 degree [steep] mogul field) Quote
Masshole Mike Posted July 28, 2008 Posted July 28, 2008 dude, i really thought this was gonna be a "how i broke my THIRD swimbait rod..." thread!!! ;D Quote
