luckyinkentucky Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 Does anyone else have the 'Equipment Itch' as bad as I do? 1) I have to have a rod rack full of $120 - $180 rods with some still in the closet in the original shipping tubes. We won't even mention the reels that are on them! 2) If a new plastic comes out I have to have one of every color since I don't know what the fish will like best from that particular bait. 3) I have a Large Bass Pro Shops Tackle Bag filled to the seams with various plastics, and even though I use all of them at least once a year I find myself looking for more to buy. 4) I have 4 Falcon Jig Wallets with a total of 80 jigs in them, but I still find myself browsing the jig section for new colors/styles. What gives? Does anyone else have it as bad as I do? ;D Quote
luckyinkentucky Posted October 29, 2007 Author Posted October 29, 2007 Just to give you an idea of how bad it is .... I've spent around $6500 CASH at Bass Pro in the past 6 months. I could have almost put down a good down payment on another bass boat. Quote
Super User Raul Posted October 29, 2007 Super User Posted October 29, 2007 You need professional help ? yes you do Cuz if you are collecting tackle instead of fishing with it there 's something really wrong, purchasing tackle is just part of the fun. Quote

Super User Raul Posted October 29, 2007 Super User Posted October 29, 2007 4. When you start pouring/tying your own jigs because you think it's cheaper Been doing that for a while, not because they are cheaper, before the shakey head craze I did fish with what now could be called shakey heads or oversize hook size jigheads. Simply I could not find jigheads in 1/16 and 1/8 oz with a 3,4 or 5/0 hook so this made me the proud owner of a bunch of 90° jihead hooks in those sizes, a melting pot and a couple of Do-it jighead molds so I could pour my own shakey heads. BTW, if you happen to go on your own on pouring oversized hook jigheads for shakey rigging let me tell you that you need to "doctor" the mold, just a little caving with a drill bit on where the hook eye is supposed to go is necessary to make the hook eye fit in the cavity, otherwise when you close the mold it creates a gap and you end up with a jighead with a very much needed lead shaving. When you start pouring/tying your own jigs because you think it's cheaper Does spending $1300 in one hour on Johnny Morris Elite Rods just because they are $30 off count as a problem? ;D I already have around 62 Lucky Craft jerkbaits. They're in the Tackle Drawer right next to my Lobina Lures which I also have around 30 of. Then there is my Strike King King Kong swimbaits that I use on Kentucky Lake with my King Shad collection. Ohhhh ... I have the swimbait bug believe me. As for using all of the lures per someone's comment above ...... please read my tag under my name. I have a job that allows me to fish 60+ hours a week during the summer months. Quote
Super User Micro Posted October 30, 2007 Super User Posted October 30, 2007 Man, can you post a picture of your massive collection? I'd like to show my wife I'm not so bad. Just one or two pictures of all your stuff and that'll do. Quote
luckyinkentucky Posted October 30, 2007 Author Posted October 30, 2007 I would, but I don't have a scanner. Never had a use for one. Guess I'd better spend some of my fishing money on a printer that has one on it. But then .... that would take away from my possible bait purchases. ;D I could take a screenshot of a BPS order I made not too long ago. It was 32 pages long when I printed it out. Would that help you? ;D That'll teach me to hit the 'Print' button next time without seeing how long it is. I keep all that stuff for insurance anymore. I had a theft a month or so ago, and that situation taught me to keep receipts. Quote
Super User Long Mike Posted October 30, 2007 Super User Posted October 30, 2007 Hey guys, it's all about fishing AND catching. How many rods, reels, lines and lures have you loaded on your boat on each fishing trip? How often do you change out your rods, reels, lines and lures from trip to trip? How many of your rods, reels, lines and lures will never be used, or will never be used a second time? My wife and I have an understanding about the clothes in our closet. "If you have not worn it for two years, you will never wear it, so get rid of it." I have not been bass fishing for very long, but I'm beginning to understand that the same "closet" analogy applies. moby bass Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 $6500 on tackle in 6 months What in the world do you guys do for a living? Quote
Davis Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 I have the itch for new stuff quite often. But my orders are low. Mostly 30-50 dollars every time. 6,000 in 6 months? That's insane to me. Be very confusing when trying to pick out stuff to take on the water. Me being mostly a bank fisherman that would just make my head hurt since I can't take everything with me. I'm starting to be content with my supply for the needs of my fishing spots. Starting is the key word. : I need to remember that most of the time fish will bite on taking just a couple different lures with you for a situation. Jig, powerbait, senko, spinnerbait. Most of the time that is enough. Quote

Super User fishfordollars Posted October 30, 2007 Super User Posted October 30, 2007 You have problems. Let me know when you are having a fire sale. I am just like you. Buy lots of things that I probably will never use. I probably spend about 100.00-150.00 a month though. Then you have gas, oil, hotel, entry fees, insurance, and the hot lures on the lake you happen to be fishing that week. Come to think of it I spend a lot more than I thought. Thanks, for making me take account. Quote
luckyinkentucky Posted October 30, 2007 Author Posted October 30, 2007 $6500 on tackle in 6 months What in the world do you guys do for a living? I'm a Wildlife Biologist for a private contractor here in Kentucky. It pays a lot better than a vet which is what I started to go to school for. State jobs pay pennies compared to what the Private Sector offers you. Pennies on the Dollar actually! I seriously didn't want this to turn into a "Mine's Bigger than your's" thread. I was just wondering if anyone has the bug as bad as I do. It seems a few of you do. I'm not trying to brag in any way. Just letting you know how bad I have it. Oh ... by the way ..... I just picked up 3 Lobina's at BPS on clearance. $9.88 a piece if you hurry. ;D Quote
jwo1124 Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 It depends on why you fish. If you are fishing for recreation, than I think that's a little overboard. But, if you are fishing for money, than it's not that bad. Say you spend 5,000 a year on tackle. Say you fish in a few tournaments, and the first place prize in each tournament is 2,500 dollars.(This would be a small local tournament) If you win three tournaments, you are up 2,500 dollars. You may not win every tournament, you may not even win one. But in order to even have a chance at winning, you will need most of that tackle. Hell, I love to catch fish. It's a lot of fun, it gets my heart racing, it's just a great rush. But it's not worth 6,500 to me. But, that's just me. I mean I could catch fish with a bobber and bait. I just think it's better with lures. So I have to spend a little extra money. But I do think there is a thing called excess. Quote
TournyFish001 Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 I just buy what i have confidence in- (Large quantities that is). Something new and unproven to me one at a time if I don't like it often times I give it away... Currently I am in a jig mode I really have confidence in them and really like a certain kind so I bought 30 of them- LOL Quote
tyrius. Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 Just to give you an idea of how bad it is ....I've spent around $6500 CASH at Bass Pro in the past 6 months. I could have almost put down a good down payment on another bass boat. Probably depends on what you spent it on. If you bought $6,500 worth or lures, then YES you have a problem. If you bought electronics for your boat, maybe a motor, other boat equipment, reels, rods, and a small percentage of that $6,500 in lures then probably not so much. The main factor though is if you can afford it and want to spend your money on it then no you don't have a problem. Quote
Super User Micro Posted October 31, 2007 Super User Posted October 31, 2007 I think you have a serious problem no matter how you slice it. No offense, but I have a hard time believing anyone could spend that kind of money on tackle. If you really spend that kind of money on fishing tackle, you have a compulsion disorder and you need professional help. If you are ***ting us attempting to sound impressive, then you are a ***ter and have ruined your name. Quote
detroit1 Posted October 31, 2007 Posted October 31, 2007 Geez i thought that i had it bad. Yes, you do need pro help. I could help a little by re-couping some of that cash. I will buy every hardbait that you won't or will not use again for 50 cents each. This will help you with your recovery... Quote
moby bass Posted October 31, 2007 Posted October 31, 2007 I don't know that I'd go so far as to suggest that you need professional help...unless YOU feel you need it. There are a lot of people who do a lot worse things with a lot more money than you spend and I'm sure they have little or nothing to show for it. At least you have some tangible, useful products. If you have the money, if other areas of your life are not neglected (food, clothing, etc) and you enjoy the collecting aspect of fishing, as well as the actual fishing, do what makes you happy. You surely don't spend that kind of money every month. If you did, I think you'd have another problem, where to put it all. ;D Quote
Super User Jimzee Posted October 31, 2007 Super User Posted October 31, 2007 Here's what I think. I think you have a liking to fishing tackle like many of us on here and if your job allows you to purchase $6,500.00 in tackle then go for it. You only live once so live it to enjoy it. Don't sweat the small stuff. Besides, I would hate to think how much I have spent this past year on fishing rods and reels alone. But you know what, I like to do it. That's all that matters.... Quote
