zelmo Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 I want to get an inexpensive combo to have on the boat for my kids or wife to use. Dick's has their Daiwa Capricorn XTC paired with the St. Croix Triumph on sale for $75, plus I get another $10 off with a coupon I have. I have used the search function and I have read what everyone has had to say about the rod and reel. I think it sounds fine for what I intend to use it for. Does anyone know of a better combo in this price range? Quote
zelmo Posted July 9, 2008 Author Posted July 9, 2008 Which one would be comparable to the Triumph? Quote
coolhandlala Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 I don't think you will find a better deal than $56 for that kind of quality. Quote
Boett43 Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 I can speak on behalf of the rod i own 2 and i love them for the price. id get a smaller power rod then what your thinking there MH is very thick they seem to run big Quote
Joe Boss Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 That Capricorn/Triumph combo for $75 is a good deal. They normally sell that combo for $119 individually the reel sells for $79 and the rod for $70. I have the spinning Capricorn/Triumph combo and I couldn't be happier with it. Quote
K.P Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 I would wait for a sale at BPS and get an Extreme, Pro-Qualifier, Rick Clunn combo. They usually have a descent sale on them. Quote
zelmo Posted July 11, 2008 Author Posted July 11, 2008 Since I am about to go on vacation and wanted another rig to take along, I couldn't wait for another deal. I pulled the trigger and picked the Triumph/Capricorn combo for $65 after the coupon. Quality seems pretty good for this price point. I will throw a couple of lures with it and see how it feels, but I think I did pretty good for an extra rod on the boat. Quote
Joe Boss Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 I went to my local Dicks Sporting Goods to see if I could land the same deal on the Capricorn baitcaster/Triumph combo. They only had the spinning model combo left and that was still $119 I picked up a Pflueger Criterion/Allstar Select combo, mostly because I like the rod but I think I am going to return it. The brake knob seems to be broken. I tighten it all the way and it doesn't slow the spool down at all. I opened it up at set the centrifugal brakes to 8 and still nothing. I know when I tighten the brake knob on my low profile ambasseduer reel the spool doesn't spin much. Quote

Then they had 25% of all clearance items (which it was.) They only had spinning combos also but that is what I wanted. Quote
