crankin reel

why a low gear ratio as opposed to a fast one?  or the other way around. why does it seem that deep crankin MUST have a low ratio reel?

also, is it genarally said that you want a slower, not so hard hookset, more of a "good pull", when using cranks?  what do you think about using and opposite of normal crank reel for this, to intentionally slow down your hookset reaction? (like you normally crank with your right hand so you use a lefty for crankin)

Your Revo S is a fine cranking reel.  I'd buy the Revo Inshore's longer handle for it and you'll have a fantastic cranking reel.

i have already checked into it. it is $23.96 per handle, that includes shipping.  the thing is, i am going to be building a crankin rod soon.  so i dont know if i will be getting another revo or if i will have to get something less expensive.  maybe i could use the revo for crankin and go with a max series to replace it.  we will see

I use my Revo S as my cranking reel... I don't throw deep cranks so it works perfectly

I use a 5.2:1 reel for deep cranking and large spinnerbaits for the same reason I use low gear on my bicycle for going up hills.  I can get up the hill with the higher gear, but it won't be fun.  I can run a DD22 with a 6.3:1 but it is an unpleasant experience and will wear the reel out quickly.

I wouldn't go cross handed for cranking. The rod itself will assist you in not "oversetting" the hook. Remember that the mod rods are "slower" in taper which softens a hookset. It's the same quality that helps to not rip hooks out when fighting the fish.

Small to med cranks, I just use one on my all purpose reels. For deep or pretty deep cranks, I have a low speed reel, the BPS Fritts model. 5BL does as much cranking as anyone here and he used to recommend the BPS Fritts cranking reels for deep divers. It's not an expensive reel and is actually on sale (I just looked)

Maybe he will see this and post some ideas. I don't have enough time behind that reel to offer much of a review. It serves my purpose so far.
