SPAZ Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 I'm looking to purchase a rod for my topwater needs. This rod will be used with 1/4oz poppers all the way up to sammy 100's. Does anyone have any ideas on which rod and what length? Quote
MusicMan Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 I like a medium or medium heavy 7'. It is a tough one because a medium is good to allow them to take the lure through any cover on top. On the other hand, the stiffer rod may be better for pulling them out of that cover. Quote

SPAZ Posted July 2, 2008 Author Posted July 2, 2008 Don't you guys find the 7' too long for topwater though, esp cigar style baits? Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted July 2, 2008 Super User Posted July 2, 2008 I'm generally a big fan of 7' rods, but I really like the way I can work topwater and jerkbaits with a 6 1/2' stick! My dedicated rod is a St. Croix Avid AC66MF which has a soft tip. 8-) Quote

Super User roadwarrior Posted July 2, 2008 Super User Posted July 2, 2008 The Pointer 100 weighs 1/2 oz. The AC66MF is rated for 1/4 - 5/8 oz lures. No problemo! 8-) Quote

smcentee Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 An expert I'm not, but I do like Daiwa's L&T topwater rod, TL-661-3RB, at 6'6" and handles 1/8 - 1 oz. I think the L&T series is a good rod for the money. Quote
