quant PT Posted June 20, 2008 Posted June 20, 2008 My wife let me buy my own fathers day present so I bought a Shimano Saros 3000 and a Crucial 6'8" dropshot rod. While casting it in the yard I noticed a problem with it. Sometimes the bail does not click open and when this happens it doesn't want to close properly. I am closing the bail by hand. It appears that this happens when the non roller side of the bail is almost in alignment with the handle. It doesn't do this at any other position. At this position the bail does not open smoothly and will stay open but will not click. Anyone have any ideas? Quote
The_Natural Posted June 20, 2008 Posted June 20, 2008 Just take it back to where you bought it and exchange it...problem solved! Quote
quant PT Posted June 20, 2008 Author Posted June 20, 2008 I plan to tomorrow. I guess I'm just curious as to what is wrong, if it is a common problem, design flaw, etc. I wonder if I should upgrade to a Stradic or get a different brand of reel. I know everyone loves Shimano, but this is the first time I've had a problem with a new reel. Quote
SawyerOB Posted June 20, 2008 Posted June 20, 2008 I would say it is just a problem with that particular reel. I would take it back and get a replacement. I just bought a Saros 4000 today and I love it on my 7 ft Elite Tech. Quote
Hooked_On_Bass Posted June 20, 2008 Posted June 20, 2008 I agree with The_Natural. Take it back and exchange it. I have a Saros 2500 (since Christmas) and it's been flawless. I love it! Quote
Super User .RM. Posted June 20, 2008 Super User Posted June 20, 2008 The reel has a ramp that is located at the exact bottom of the frame. As the rotor spins to the bottom (line roller side) of the frame, the ramp helps kick the bail back over. When you have the none roller (bail arm) side up even with the reel seat you in essence have the bail return kicker down on the ramp, that is why it only happens in that position. This is the nature of the beast for Shimano® spinning reels. If you tried to open the bail w the bail arm say at the 90° mark it wouldn't have any problem doing so and, if you crank a full rotation the bail would probably close with a very positive action. IMPO I don't think the reel has a problem.. Oh BTW the upgrade from Saros is Sahara.. Just my .02¢ from the bench. Good Luck & Tight Lines!!! Quote
SawyerOB Posted June 20, 2008 Posted June 20, 2008 Your saying the Sahara is better than the Saros? Quote
Hooked_On_Bass Posted June 20, 2008 Posted June 20, 2008 Your saying the Sahara is better than the Saros? Ummmmm I think The Reel Mechanic is mistaken. I have both and the Saros is a much nicer reel, IMO. :-? ;D Quote

Thanks RM, This is what the guy at my local tackle store said also when I tried to bring it back today. I was comparing the reel to my Stradic 4000 which is what made me think something was wrong. I kept the Saros, I'll just learn to live with this little glitch. Not a big deal as long as I know everything is as it should be. I love the reel otherwise. BTW I tested several Stradics and Saros' today and while the Stradics also do this, it is not as noticeable (it's harder to catch it at the right spot with the Stradic). Thank you again for your help. Quote
SawyerOB Posted June 21, 2008 Posted June 21, 2008 In my opinion the Saros is smoother than the Stradic. Quote
