Tonight I received a call (they apparently called last night but I was not home) from a person claiming to be from Bassmaster and wanted to know if I was receiving my magazine on time.  They also stated that they wanted to keep the price of the magazine low and offerred me a deal.  They said they needed to verify my address and I would be getting a call in the next few minutes to do so.  I declined to that as I was on my way out and they asked if they could call back tomorrow.  When I hung up, I checked the caller ID and it said blocked/unknown and I even tried *69 with no avail.  I then went on bassmaster.com and called them...but their business hours ended at 6pm I believe.  I got my call at 8:01pm.  Did anyone else get a call like this and what/how do I approach this situation if they call again?  I am not going to give out my address or other info but found it wierd that a telemarketer or anyone would call about my bassmaster subscription.  Thanks for any info or help.

What's wierd is, if it wasn't bassmaster (and it probably was not) then it had to have been someone who new you recieved Bassmaster magazine......  :-?

I dunno, all he would really have to do is buy some bass fishing product from a company that gave out his info and it would quickly move down the line.

Or even more likely is sometimes surveys will ask what you are interested in or what magazines you receive etc.

Bassmaster has your address... you have a subscription!  And if it (the address) was wrong and you never got a magazine, you would have called them long ago.

Sounds like a "bill me" when it arrives type of scam.

I have been a life member of B.A.S.S. since the early 80's and have never been contacted by the organization via phone. I would not give any info to any company phishing like that, and the national do not call list "does not" and "never has" worked.

Just my .02¢

Good Luck & Tight Lines!!!

Not really. A lot of "phising" attempts do similiar things and hope to get lucky. They will often call and ask about something just hoping that you might have whatever they are contacting you about. If not, then they hang up and try someone else.

I received a call from them last night too, and I answered it in person. the thing is, I figured they were calling because I let it expire and that they were trying to get me to resubscribe.

However, being the slick dude that I am (ha-bs), I claimed that I wasn't here and requested a phone number so that I can have islandbass call them back.

The person said that he was an outbound caller and didn't have a return phone number to give. Hmmmm......

I love playing these telemarketers. I don't know too much about how they operate but it did seem very odd to me that he wasn't able to leave a return number.

I can't conclude if he were legit or a scam, but I am defintely inclined to lean toward the latter.

Big Bass,

I would be reluctant to "verify" anything from a place like BassMaster who should have that stuff on file.  The times I might consider giving information as such is when I made the call and I know it is to a legit operator like my credit card co. A good rule of thumb is if they call you and ask for such info, be suspicious. If you call them, you can rest a bit easier.

scam for sure. I do outbound calling sometimes for my job, and when i'm doing that do not have a direct extension, but i definitely have a contact number for the company or someone else that they can call back. No legit company is going to not have a number. In fact it's national law that you have to have a call-back number when soliciting buisness

It just seems like a scam to me.  For example when I have been asked to verify information from a legit call they always read me my information and ask if that is correct instead of asking me to give them the information they should already have.  If that makes sense.
