Super User .dsaavedra. Posted October 29, 2007 Super User Posted October 29, 2007 i saw these and i was wondering: what are they for what do they do do they simulate a single hook (like a worm hook) so that fish dont come unbuttoned as often? what would happen if i replaced the trebels on my crank with small wide gap worm hooks? would i be able to use a stiffer rod with it? Stringjam Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 I despise SureSets.....I get hung up waaaaay to often with them (I fish cranks a lot in heavy cover). If you have any - I would recommend incinerating them before another hapless soul comes upon them and makes the same mistake I did. Quote
Super User Bassin_Fin@tic Posted October 29, 2007 Super User Posted October 29, 2007 "What are they for?" Supposed to increase hookup with short strikers.Dont think it has much to do with how well it holds. Dont know if they are better or not.Havent noticed any difference in hookup ratio except when a bass slaps a crank I often find the sureset stuck on the outside of its head.Really though these things grab a lot of weeds, snag easier, and grab a lot of bottom gunk in general silt, muck, shells and snails. One other bad thing I noticed after using sureset extensively is in regards to catch and release.Have had a tone of fish get these things caught in and around their gill layers. They will then bleed to death inevitably if the gill tissue is punctured. Dont think a stiffer rod would be the way to go for any cranking either, unless of course your fishing heavy timber. Were you asking about putting single wide gaps on a bait?? Dunno never tried, maybe someone else?Seems to me that hardbaits come with trebles for a reason. The fish hit hard and from various angles. Quote
Super User 5bass Posted October 29, 2007 Super User Posted October 29, 2007 The bigger hook on the SureSets rides up and I havent noticed anymore hang ups when using them. I dont crank brushpiles with them but I do use them when fishing rocks and offshore stuff that's not too sticky. My home lake doesnt have any grass so I cant say how they do in grass. The one thing I like about the SS hooks is that the one bigger hook grabs a whole lot more skin and jaw than a regular treble.....and in some cases they penetrate all the way thru and out the other side.
