bayoukritter Posted June 14, 2008 Posted June 14, 2008 I was wondering what line would be best for my son's pole. he has a cheap superman pole that he really likes, and the line it came with breaks with any good tug. it has a drag on it so i was thinking of maybe using an eight pound test for it. I just put some 8 lb. diameter spider wire on it and it feels really ruff so i figure maybe goin with mono. The light line is ok for perch but i want something he can handle a nice red or bass with. I would hate to see him hook a good fish only to break the line before landing it. Quote
Bassboy15 Posted June 14, 2008 Posted June 14, 2008 Just go to Walmart and look around, I'm sure as long as you don't go TO cheap, he'll be fine Good Luck Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted June 14, 2008 Super User Posted June 14, 2008 get some 10 or 20 lb power pro for him. strong and it wont tagle up like cheap mono will. Quote
Super User islandbass Posted June 14, 2008 Super User Posted June 14, 2008 Those combos work best with 6# mono. When I bought my daughter her Barbie rod, it recommends 6# mono. Line any thinner and the reel might not be able to pick up the line and any thicker seems to makes things difficult. The line that it came with was probably in bad shape. Also, unless the cover is super heavy, 6# line can handle even a 5# bass. There are folks in my area that have a special trip in which they target steelhead with scooby and superman rods. I know they land 15# + steelhead on that 6# line so rest assured that the 6# mono can handle a decent sized bass. One last thing. The little knob that retrieves the line on those rods is notorious for damaging the line. Be sure to periodically check the line for nicks and such. Many a fish have fallen victim to my little girl's barbie rod. Quote
packman Posted June 14, 2008 Posted June 14, 2008 i would never use spider wire because ounce you use it for awile it bends and u cant cast Quote
CookieMonst3r Posted June 15, 2008 Posted June 15, 2008 get some 10 or 20 lb power pro for him.strong and it wont tagle up like cheap mono will. Agreed Quote
.Paxamus. Posted June 15, 2008 Posted June 15, 2008 Whatever diameter the reel calls for, be it 6# or 8# use that diameter, but I would spool it up with some P-Line CXX. That stuff is tough and cheap. i have heard good things about Cajun Red Cast, but have no experince with it. That CXX is real tough though. Quote
bayoukritter Posted June 17, 2008 Author Posted June 17, 2008 I ended up going with #8 stren my friend had layin around and its casting and reelin great. thax for the tips. I also agree p-line is worth the bang for the buck, i have #20 on my pole and i have been very pleased with it. 8-) Quote
EdKras Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 I have my kids using Cajun red cast 8lb on spinning gear. It's a better line than I would have expected. The bulk spool was 8 bucks for 1600 yards. They think the red is cool and they still catch fish. Quote
NBR Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 Not knowing how old he is but I'm thinking not yet a teen ager I'd put 6# easy cast mono. It provides some stretch to help with fighting fish. I prefer Trilene XL but there are a lot of good mono's. Quote
