Dangle Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 I started fishing seriously a few years ago. I have not had the time lately, but want to get back into it. I want to get a new reel/rod, something more finesse. right now i have an ambasseduer, and a 6 foot Berkley graphite rod, medium heavy I think. I want to use this for salt water, but want to purchase a new rod/reel for fresh water. Here is what i was thinking for the reel. will this get the job done? Abu Garcia - Black Max (cant post link yet, sorry) for the rod, i want something more flexible than what i have. my current rod isn't the easiest thing to cast unless i put alot of force into it. casting weightless senko's isn't easy. i want something more flexible than a Medium heavy, and what length do you think is good? i will be mostly using plastic worms, fishing lakes in south Florida. also, what type of line? i have on 12lb berkley mono. would fluorocarbon be worth the extra money ??? thanks in advanced. senko_77 Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 The Black Max reel should be fine with casting plastics. Just make sure you play around with the brakes to find what tension allows you to cast your baits the farthest without frequently birdnesting. As far as a rod goes, any kind of graphite rod will work. I prefer a 7' rod with a medium power and a fast action. The rod has enough tip to sling weightless plastics around, and enough backbone to allow you to work a fish in the thick, Florida grass. Good luck Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted June 17, 2008 Super User Posted June 17, 2008 Welcome aboard! I would suggest a 7' Medium Power/ Fast Action spinning rig. Specifically a St. Croix Avid AVS70MF matched with a Shimano Stradic 2500FI and Yo-Zuri Hybrid Ultra Soft #6 (.010" diameter, 11.9 lb test). 8-) Quote
Dangle Posted June 17, 2008 Author Posted June 17, 2008 Thanks for the quick replies, I have a few spinning rods, but once i learned to use bait cast, i prefer it for bass fishing alot more. 7' medium sounds good to me, what about fishing line? Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted June 17, 2008 Super User Posted June 17, 2008 On baitcasting gear I recommend Yo-Zuri Hybrid Ultra Soft #12 (.013" diameter, 19.5 lb test). 8-) Quote
Dangle Posted June 17, 2008 Author Posted June 17, 2008 I could not find any ultra soft on basspro but I found Yo-Zuri® Hybrid Line 12 lb. .13 diameter. choice of either clear or camo green. also i have some berkley 12lb, and some spider-wire, line at home, but this would be alot better im guessing? Super User roadwarrior Posted June 17, 2008 Super User Posted June 17, 2008 I think you will like the original foumula Hybrid just fine. I would recommend treating it with KVD Line & Lure Conditioner to reduce memory. If you fish mostly clear water, the green blends best; for stained water, I prefer the smoke color. 8-) Quote
Dangle Posted June 17, 2008 Author Posted June 17, 2008 ok, im going to get the clear, but is a fluorocarbon leader nessicery, or suggested, or should i spool just the yo-zuri hybrid. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted June 17, 2008 Super User Posted June 17, 2008 No leader, but again: green for clear water, smoke for stained water. These blend better than "clear" which is white. 8-) Quote
Dangle Posted June 17, 2008 Author Posted June 17, 2008 I mostly fish lake wellington, water is pretty clear. heres some fish from there. biggest: Quote
Davis Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 Dangle take a look at *** for your rod and reel. No tax...at least not for me in NY and free shipping for any order over 50 dollars. Very very fast shipping. Here are your Abu's: http://www.***.com/catpage-RLCABUGAR.html May I recommend the Compre line for your rods. My favorite rod besides my St Croix Avid is my Compre 6'8" MH XF. Lifetime warranty with good sensitivity. http://www.***.com/descpageRDCSHIMANO-SCCR.html Quote
