The_Natural Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 I have to ask the question; if the Shimanos are the epitome of reels, then why have they discontinued a two year old design(D model Curado and Citica) and are now creating new models for 08? Could it be that they cannot compete with the Revo? They aren't. Bassresource is kind of our little 'world' we live in, and Shimano's dominate here. If you go down to the Texas Fishing Forum, they don't think the Fat Ika is anything special and will most likely recommend Trilene Big Game. Don't get me wrong...Shimano has the majority of the reel market share (35%), but while fishing tournaments, the guys I draw I think represent what the workin' man is buying. I bet I see more Bass Pro reels than anything. Quite a few Quantums as well. I'll tell you...the Revo is coming one VERY strong. They are showing up on the deck of more and more boats. Quote

Super User .RM. Posted June 5, 2008 Super User Posted June 5, 2008 booneangler, Nothing from Q could be a good thing... Here is something more to think about, the Shimano® anglers here are prematurely wetting their pants over speculation of something new from Shimano®. They don't know and nobody in the know (Shimano) isn't talking, so the BR anglers are doing it all for everyone else. Even the people in the know (Shimano) on TT's forum say nothing, and the anglers from here keep harping. So maybe nothing from Q is a good thing... Just my .02¢ from the bench..... Quote
booneangler Posted June 5, 2008 Author Posted June 5, 2008 well i dont think quantum makes junk if that is what you are saying i think shimano is a good company to i just use them for the spinning reels. I like a Quantum and Abu Garcia for a baitcaster. Quote
KvD Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 boone, i think Cabela's still has the pt reels for 99 bucks... but all they have left is the 7:1 burner ratio.... energy PT: http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/item-link.jsp_A&_DAV=MainCatcat20166-cat20331&id=0036209120574a&navCount=1&podId=0036209&parentId=cat20331&masterpathid=&navAction=push&catalogCode=8IS&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat20331&hasJS=true#chart Alex Quote

Reel Mech, this thread was highjacked the second the Shimano Possee showed up. One member even went back and changed his post to be less harsh. Quote
Bassyak Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 I've been pretty partial to Quantums over the past few years. The previous model Energy PTs were the first "high end" reels that I bought when really getting geared up for bass fishing about 4 or 5 years ago. I still have four of them (2 E600PTs, an E650PT, and an E640PT) and aside from the crappy coating on a couple of them that has started to peel off, they're in great shape--still very smooth and long casters, as well as easy to control with the external ACS. The profile fits my hand well and even though they're a little heavier than my Curado 100DSV and Pflueger Summit, I still use them all the time (espectially the 640 with a 4.4:1 Ratio for crankin'). I also have an '07 Accurist AC500PT and two KVD Signature Series Baitcasters (KV600C w/ 5.1:1 and KV600CX w/ 6.2:1) that are basically the same as the Accurist, minus the silver w/ red accents paint job and a couple other minor features, and they are smooth, solid, and palmable reels for their price as well. They also have the flipping switch that comes in handy. Finally, I have a Code CD870CX that I just got a couple months ago. It's my least favorite Quantum so far, which probably follows as I paid the least for it. I don't like the shape as much and the gearing is not as smooth as any of my other reels. Maybe I just got a bad one, but I don't really care for it and will probably be trading it in for a Citica 100 or maybe another Curado 100 (or I might save up for a bit and try the Pflueger Patriarch). But I imagine I'll be holding on the the others for awhile because they've been good, solid reels for me thus far. Quote

I fished Quantum exclusively back in the day, but I will admit they fell apart and ended up with misaligned gears. That was before aluminum frames were the norm (and I had the top of the line). I have owned a cheap Shimano with a graphite frame that also ended up grinding...I'm chalking this up to the graphite frame. I haven't owned an aluminum framed Quantum until this point; we'll see how they do. Granted I don't keep reels more than a couple of years. I never let my reels get dated. Quote
Dawson Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 I like to have several brands of reels on hand, so I have a couple from most of the big brands. I have 3 Quantums. 2 Energy PT's and an Accurist AC500CX. I love all 3 of them. I have ran them through the ringer I might add. They feel great in my hand, very smooth, and reliable. I cannot agree with some people that Quantum makes only junk reels. I am only speaking from personal experience with these 2 models. I love em. Quote
