Shimano Curado D Series Reels....Discontinued???

I have been scanning the internet as of late and have read on numerous sites that the Curado D series of reels has been de-commissioned. I have also seen these reels on sale both at my own BPS and Cabelas ... I am very perplexed by this move. I am more concerned for my musky arsenal bc of the 300 DSV. Why would Shimano get rid of this series when they JUST spent all that time and money to create this wonderful reel? Can anyone shed some light on this situation??? Anyone else have any info for me??? Please...anything!!!!

Any idea as to why??? Also, is the entire series disco'd??? Will they be bringing the 300 back with the new mystery "green" series of reels???

the curado D series will be replaced by the curado E series. why the short life for the D series? for one, the 200-size was just plain too heavy. secondly, ABU garcia's new revos have 3-4x the drag power and were smaller and lighter and bit into the curado's market share. i think the new E curados will address all these things.

Because I switched all of my baitcasting needs from Shimano to Abu partly because the one 200D I have gets used less than my old Curado 200 SF Green reels.  That D series 200 is a paperweight if you ask me.  Definitely not holding in the Shimano tradition of making superior reels.

Why ? because they revamped the Citica making it a better value and a better reel than the old mean green fishing machine.

I had a 201 D and did not care for it.  I might have had a different opinion on the 100 series but I like my old 201 BSF.  Oddly enough, I have heard people say they either love the D or the hate it but I never here anything about the Castic.  Which in my opinion is the exact same as the Curado BSF.  When I saw the Curado D and the Castic, I was not sure which direction Shimano was going in.  

When Shimano comes out with the new one, I hope it looks and feels like the old Curado, is lighter in weight, and has the HEG gears.

My brother-in-law has 4 of these reels.  When I saw that and realized what he paid for them all (each one on a Shimano Compre rod too) I said to myself "never will I spend that kind of money on a single rod and reel".  I know some people are gonna disagree with this, but I don't see that the Curado D is any better than the BPS Extreme I bought.  I honestly wouldn't trade him mine for his either.

I have a 200-D 7:1 ratio and like it as much as my other three green Curado's. I have it on a St.Croix AC68MXF and it is my most used set up. That being said anytime a reel is discontinued so fast, it makes you wounder. I have not seen many negitive reviews on this reel so that leads me to believe that it's a price or marketing issue. All in all I think it's a great reel.

So the newer Citicas are considered on par with the classic green Curados?

Here 's what you get when you get a Citica:

Septon contoured knobs vs conventional knobs

Aluminum cast control knob cap vs plastic

Wiffle spool in some models

HEG gearing

1/4 turn key access sideplate

The sideplate remains attched to the reel

Dartanium drag

Aluminum drag star

Those are better features than the ones you found in the top of the mean green ( Curado 200BSF ) for $120 while the BSF was $150.

I love my mean greens but that love doesn 't cloud my vision, the Citica D is a better reel than them.

What does Shimano need to do with the Curado to reclaim its reputation? What kind of features are necessary, and at what price point???

If your a lefty you can still get some at Cabela's online.

I am sure they are losing market share to Abu for stated reasons, but if you can get a deal with the Curado D then go ahead and do it, its still a great reel.  

Can't wait to see what Shimano releases to gain back some market share, I love competition between the manufactures, it gives us bassers something to look forward to.

The flaws I see in the Curado and Citica D in the larger 200 size model have a lot to do with weight issues, not features. Like I said, I own reels from Shimano and Daiwa, HEG gearing is not new, many Daiwa reels ( TDZ, Zillion, Fuego, Viento, Sol ) have it but none of them weights 10 friggin ' ounces !  >

I agree, they managed to reduce the weight in the 100 size models by over an ounce compared to the previous generation Curado 100B but to the eyes of many it 's like the 100 size reel models never existed, many view them as "too small" or feel that they won 't cut it due to the smaller size ( which far from being the truth ) so all the good things they adeed and did to the 100 size went down the drain with the 200 size which i a lot more mainstream, they really blew it.

To tell you the truth, many say the reel is not worth 200 dollars, to my eyes it 's worth the 200 dollars they were asking for it, why I say it ? because it has better features than the Curado 200BSF, it has better features than the previous Chronarch which was a 200 dollars reel, I know it because I had it, with the features it has it is worth the 200 dollars. You are really paying and getting more features than if you purchased an old Chronarch.

Only problem is that when they revamped the Citica they gave the Citica a better value, the value the old Curado had vs the old Chronarch and above the 100 dollars old Citica.

3 things turned me away from the 200 D's.  Weight, price and size in that order.   Shimano is going to bounce back with authority....typical Shimano, expect a lot.

Aside from having the bulge of the gearing on the handle side which doesn 't count for the ergonomic department they are the same size you found in the old Citicas, Curados and Chronarchs. I know it because I did the size/ergonomics comparison when I purchased the Citica 200D which is the same frame of the Curado and the Cruxis.

I for one am looking forward to the E series curados.Even though it may be awhile before i'll afford one.The weight of my 200D citica was enough for me to decide to wait for a different reel.I still might try to pick up the 100D if i can find a good deal on one.

The 100d was such an improvement...I'm thinking the HEG gearing ruined the 200d.  Take a 100d and add a larger spool and voila!  A light weight Curado 200.  Now lets talk about that $200 price tag
