Super User A-Jay Posted May 24, 2008 Super User Posted May 24, 2008 These look like higher grade Rods that are a cheaper than a G.Looms.Anybody have them, or used one? I have not used that model - but have been a Shimano fan for years. I have several versions of the Clarus both spinning and casting - they are a very good quality blank with decent components. Comparing them to a G Loomis is debatable and might not be fair. I have a couple of G Loomis salt water surfcasting rods they are very nice and sort of in another catagory. For those who have the $$$ for a G Loomis the Clarus and the Crucial might not even be a consideration. But for the $$$ and what you get, they should be. The spinning rods are on sale at the link below for a very decent price - with the extra $$$$ you could get 2 rods ? Of course, then you'd need reels as well http://www.***.com/descpageRDSSHIMANO-SHCLSR.html A-Jay Quote
Super User Jeff H Posted May 24, 2008 Super User Posted May 24, 2008 I have 3 Crucial and I think they represent an excellent performance level for their price. They are light, very sensitive and use good components. Great rods!! Quote
Super User Catt Posted May 24, 2008 Super User Posted May 24, 2008 In 2007 my Shimano Crucial CRC-X610MH accounted for over 700 bass with 8 of those going over 10 pounds so yea I kinda like it; oh yea I can afford G. Loomis but chose the Crucial. Quote
Jake P Posted May 24, 2008 Posted May 24, 2008 I bought a 7' MH/F and love it, i will now be buying a 7'6 H version for flipping and pitching jigs and plastics and a 6'6'' MH for all of my T-rigging needs. I got my first Crucial off of Ebay for 130$ shipped. I saved the extra 15$ off the original price and the gas i would of used to go to buy it, give Ebay a try they may have some brand spankin new. idiot1 Posted May 24, 2008 Posted May 24, 2008 Shimano makes great rods for the price. They have, arguably, a better warranty than G. Loomis does, since you can exchange it right at the store and you're back fishing in a matter of minutes or hours, rather than days. On a bit of a side note, I wonder lately how much technology Shimano and G. Loomis swap with each other, since both make such nice rods lately. ;D Quote
KevO Posted May 24, 2008 Posted May 24, 2008 I have the crucial crankbait model. It is a very good rod. you will be happy with it if you buy it. Quote
quant PT Posted May 25, 2008 Posted May 25, 2008 I have the 7' medium cranking model and the 7' medium X-fast. I love them both. I also have a Clarus 6' 10" MHF that I had before the Crucials and it is a good rod as well, but the Crucials are noticeably better. You will not be disappointed with Crucial rods. Quote
BassinDave Posted May 25, 2008 Posted May 25, 2008 I have a 6'6" mh that I use for T-rig. I'm extremely happy with it and plan on adding more to my arsinal soon. Quote
Super User Jeff H Posted May 25, 2008 Super User Posted May 25, 2008 Well, that should about settle it huh? Have we seen such a positive Shimano thread here in awhile? ;D Quote
OldGuyAl Posted May 25, 2008 Posted May 25, 2008 The Crucials are a top contender in their price range. I prefer St. Croix Avids but I would be very happy with a Crucial in my hands at any time. And, like the other guys, I also own Loomis and Kistler rods that cost more than twice as much. You won't be disappointed with the Crucial but check out the Avids, too. Quote

Super User David P Posted May 25, 2008 Super User Posted May 25, 2008 They're a pretty basic, good rod. I still think there's better rods in the price range, especially if you're willing to shell out another $30ish. Quote
Super User Jeff H Posted May 25, 2008 Super User Posted May 25, 2008 They're a pretty basic, good rod. Can you elaborate on that a little bit? What are they, a glass blank with 5 guides on them and a cork handle? Is an Avid "pretty basic"? I still think there's better rods in the price range, especially if you're willing to shell out another $30ish. Do you own one? List out your better options and their price. One could probably do better if willing to shell out another $100 too? Quote

Loomis but chose the Crucial. I have that exact rod and I love it! I also have a CRS-66MH (Crucial - spinning) and it is great too. Quote

I wasn't saying it in a negative way what so ever, simply that there are other rods and choices out there. Daiwa Light and Tough rods are a few dollars cheaper, which I have fished and like better. Gblanks custom rods - $125 , incredibly light, very sensitive, great guides, tons of options to have it built to your liking. Carrot Stix are $150, which I have held, but not fished. Dobyns rods $170 , which are my rods of choice. I also meant nothing negative by "basic" no need to get all hurt over that. Simply that they're relatively standard, nothing "special" nothing "stand out/fancy" about them. Not sure what you meant by your $100 remark, but that should be quite obvious. Quote

His question was very simple and to the point. If the Crucial is a basic rod, so are 95% of the rods on the market.... being that it is comprised of a graphite blank, 10 guides, a reel seat and cork handle, either split grip or full. So right on, it IS a basic rod. I just thought it was a dumb "blanket" statement. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted May 26, 2008 Super User Posted May 26, 2008 The Crucials are the best and lightest rods at their price point. They also sport the best warranty. Quote

Best warranty for a sub $150 rod yes. Lightest, I don't think so. My 6'10 MH Gblanks weighed in at 3.1oz also felt more sensitive, and looked better ;D Quote

Just thought I'd put some options out there, that guys don't always think about. I just know that when I first started asking questions about rods, I ended up 2 weeks later finding something else I wish I had gotten instead ;D Quote

Jake P Posted May 26, 2008 Posted May 26, 2008 I have a 7' MH/F i use for jigging, it works perfect for me.Its available in all different powers, actions and lengths for all different types of applications. Quote
