hey guys. i wanted to ask you what you would suggest for a spinning reel and rod?

ive searched and noticed the shimano symetre came up a lot, but im a broke college student and im looking for something a little less pricey, but im keeping that option open in case i splurge a little more.

as far as rods...a 6' or 6'6"? or what would you suggest?

also for line, flouro or mono? 6# or 8#? any brands you suggest? keep in mind i usually throw soft plastics

thanks in advance everyone, this site is very helpful!

The Symetre would be my first choice spinning reel regardless of price, i know there is an incredible deal going on that i would not pass up if i didnt already have one somewhere but i forgot the name of the website, im sure someone will let you know asap. As for a second choice i would go with the Shimano Sahara is 59.99$ and also a great reel. For a rod i would go with a lighter right like a Medium power Fast action and whatever length feels comfortable to you whether it be 6'6'' or 7'. 6 or 8 # line would be perfect, 10 would be the highest i would go on a spinning outfit. Good luck  :(.

I would go with a combo from bass pro. I have several extreme spinning combos that I use for bass, hybrids, and even redfish. They are very smooth. These are the best value IMO at $109 for rad and reel.

$99

The next one would be a Sahara/Bionic Blade Combo. My brother uses this combo and I have on numerous occasions. I also have a sahara but paired with an Extreme rod. I prefer the extreme but they are good reels.

$59.95

My last one would be for under $100. It is not as good as the 2 above but still a good performer. I also had one of these but it was stolen. The reel is incredibly smooth and the rod fairly sensitive.

As far as line, I love flouro but NOT on spinning gear. Trilene XL is a good affordable line that can be found at Wal-Mart. I sually spool my reels with 8 pound Sufix Seige or Trilene, and put 30 pound braid on the spare spool. That way I can use the same setup on anything from trout to redfish.

Oh, I would go with a 6'6 or 7' rod. Medium action.

Have Fun!

If you have a Gander Mountain nearby go and get a Guide Series GST35 for about $40.00. These are the same as the Pflueger Presidente (I think) someone correct me if I am wrong. As for rods, if I wanted somethin cheap but durable go with a berkley lightning rod. You can get these at walmart for like $35. total cost under $100 and a very durable set up. You will like this. The reel is unbelievably smooth.

I've got a couple of the Shimano Sedona's that I use for loaners and family.  For the price, they are great and i just checked, they are on sale right now for $39  I've had them a couple years and are perfectly trouble free and user friendly.

For rods, you can get decent stuff at Academy or other local places.  I'm not much help in budget spinning rods.

And for line, I'd use (mono) #6 or #8 trilene XL.  available everywhere, inexpensive and pretty good.

I agree! I just bought a sedona for 50 bucks and it is a very nice reel! Very smooth, very durable, and quiet! 8-)  Havent found a bad part of it yet. It is also a smaller reel than alot of those bigger and more awkward models.  I'm lovin it.  Also check out some of the reviews for it. Seems it has a very solid following

I think they are actually Trion's. But even so, I would second this reel choice, or even just go for the actual Pflueger Trion....its a pretty inexpensive reel, and personally I have been very VERY pleased with them!!!!

i appreciate those of you that posted info and actually read my thread!

i will take all options into consideration.

im going to return my books from this semester so i should have some money to play around with.

I have a pflueger for my panfish/trout setup and i love that reel.  Im going to consider the shimano symetre, sedona, and the pflueger president (6740? i think is the model #?)

as for rods should i go with a 6'6? or like what someone said..should i just go to a store and feel them and see which one i like?

thanks again for all your responses!
