two rods

Hi all, i'm a noob with some questions.

I have done a little internet research but would like some final advice.

I want to get two rods, one for plasitc and sensitive work, and the other for casting crankbaits and whatnot.

Are these findings roughly correct?

The one for plastic should be a medium power, fast action rod 6'6"-7'

The casting one should be medium power, medium action 7'ish

Should one be longer than the other?

I dont think i will be dealing with monster fish, so should i get the lowest power rod appropriate to the fish weight, or do the power and action characteristics affect each other so that it should be specifically medium,fast and not light,fast.

if i were you id get

7ft med-hev fast action rod for plastics

and a 7ft med mod for cranks ...

I think it depends on your situation.

I really like 7 foot rods. However, if you are a bank fisherman, you may want something shorter as its hard to cast a longer rod with trees behind you!

As for the action, those will work fine as long as the rods have plenty of backbone. I actually prefer a MH for most texas rigged baits and for throwing jigs and so forth. But a good med will work.

I personally would get a M and a MH to cover nearly all your needs. But whatever get, enjoy it and watch out for the bait monkey.

7' MH with fast action for plastics.

7' M with a moderate action for cranks

I don't what your budget is or what your planning on spending but if you have a smaller budget I would definately put more money towards a sensitive worm rod and skimp a little on the crankin stick. Sensitivity is much more important with worms than cranks IMO.

If were faced with the dilemma of only two rods ( which I faced for a long time when I was a student or when I go on foot patrol ) I would go for a Medium Fast action for cranks, topwaters, jerbaits and finesse techniques, and a Medium Heavey or Heavy Fast action for bottom bumpers and spinnerbaits.

I am definately on a budget as i am a college student and go fishing with my friend a lot, but i only have one crappy rod with a nicer reel i just bought.

Any suggestions for rods/combos in the cheap range, ugly stik quality or less

I am nowhere near experienced enough to benefit from the difference between a $30 dollar rod and a $100 rod but now that i've started fishing again i could definately be more versitile with two rods that do different jobs.

If you are looking for rods under $50. I would take a look at the Berkley Lightning Rods. They are $35 and have a $5 rebate.

If you want to spend around $70 then you can get an Extreme Series from bass pro that is really nice.

PS. The lightning rod got me through college 10 years ago and probably caught more fish than any other rod I have owned since

Don't count out Shimano's Clarus ($59) and Compre ($89) rods. Excellent bang for the buck with quality components and warranty.

You will still feel the diffrence and it will help you become a better angler. Don't be cheap because you'll end up spending the money sooner than you think. Then at that point you are out even more. :

I fully agree with Hawgchaser on the Lightening Rods and the BPS Extreme. For the money, they are hard to beat. Shimano Clarus is also a very good rod.

Keep and eye for sales and be patient. I just picked up two Berkley Tactic rods for 50% off. Orignally $50 each, on sale for $25 a piece.

They are the step up from the Lightning, also the tactix have a $10 rebate. If berkely still honors that rebate in light of getting them for 50% off, I will have $100 worth of rods and have spend only $30.

BPS Extremes are $70 right now, they go as low as $60. I was lucky and got a $10 off coupon which brought my purchase price to $50 and with a bps giftcard of $40 I only spent $10. Between those three rods I spend only $40 out of pocket, replacement value would be $200 if not on sale....

Keep and eye out on Craigslist and the BR flea market. I bought a practically new Shimano Symetre for $45, new price $80. Getting decent stuff on a budget isn't impossible it just take persistence and patience.

So i went to fleet farm to browse and i found a nice 7' lightning rod medium power that i'll probably get.  

I am finding it really hard to find a lightweight, stiff, fast action rod for working a texas rig. >

 There were some tactix rods that were on clearance though that i might get especially since i can get rebates on both.

There was a 7' drop shot/finesse rod and some 6' worming/jigging rods all medium power.  Would one of these work?

Another question, most rods say medium then the lure weight and then line weight. is the medium refering to the power or action.  Not many rods give a specific action rating.

They are refering to power if you spent 80 dollars more you could get a crucial 7' mf sweet rod only 130$

I'm going to get a medium 7' lightning rod for cranks, which one of the Clarus' would be good for texas rigging?

Will these rods last me a long time?

I'm getting close to splurging!

I think either the tactic or the Clarus in a fast action would be fine for the t-rig.  Take care of them and they should last.
