21farms Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 does spooling fishing line onto baitcasting reels using a spooling station offer any significant advantages other than the obvious ease of use and consistent tension? if the line is spooled on much tighter with a spooling station than i can do by squeezing the line between my fingers as i'm spooling, does that reduce potential backlashing? Super User islandbass Posted May 13, 2008 Super User Posted May 13, 2008 It is far more convenient, bottom line. You could put line on with one hand and pick your nose with the other. ;D To achieve tension with ease, I use a phonebook. Quote
muskyxl Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 I have been wanting to get a line station... Anyone have any recommendations? Thx in advance Quote
Super User Micro Posted May 14, 2008 Super User Posted May 14, 2008 The Berkley spooling station works great. It's just way convenient. The battery operated line stripper that comes with it sucks - throw it away. Quote

ABC123 Posted May 15, 2008 Posted May 15, 2008 1) does spooling fishing line onto baitcasting reels using a spooling station offer any significant advantages other than the obvious ease of use and consistent tension?2) if the line is spooled on much tighter with a spooling station than i can do by squeezing the line between my fingers as i'm spooling, does that reduce potential backlashing? 1) No, but the ease of use and the consistant tension make it worthwhile. 2) No, not really. Backlash is caused by having the cast control set too light. While having a loose wound spool might make the "over run" worse, it won't reduce the chances of having "over runs". Quote
muskyxl Posted May 15, 2008 Posted May 15, 2008 Can someone explain the whole phonebook thing? It either has white or yellow pages, it lists the names alphabetical... :-X Honestly, I dont understand the phonebook method of putting on line either. Quote
bowtech_182 Posted May 15, 2008 Posted May 15, 2008 Can someone explain the whole phonebook thing? Open phonebook, insert line, close phonebook, reel. It creates tension the line. Quote
harshman Posted May 15, 2008 Posted May 15, 2008 1. open the phone book 2. lay down an old rag 3. spray the rag with a line conditioner 4. close the phone book so that it sandwiches the line in the rag 5. Start reeling in line, if it seems to loose either use more of the pages for weight or add another phone book on top for tension. Harshman Quote
muskyxl Posted May 15, 2008 Posted May 15, 2008 see, now that makes sense...i had visions of putting the whole new spool in the book and trying to reel : Quote
Triangle Sport Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 It is not for everyone but the Cyclone Pro Spooling Station is the dream setup. Go to our website (www.linewinders.com) and see. We are a sponsor so it is okay for me to post. I heard the phonebook thing causes problems with line durability because of the friction generated while pulling it through the book. Don't know if its true but thats what a line engineer told me some time ago. The other gadgets don't hold up in the long run and they are all made in China. Be careful, don't eat one. Quote
