when I worked at dick's we sold the Daiwa Samurai combo. It was one of the lower end combos. The reel wasn't what can be expected of a reel in that price range, I never really looked much at the rod. I would assume it would be the same story as the reel, but I could be wrong.

I have a Daiwa Samurai rod that is probably 20 yrs old. It works fine for crankbaits and spinner baits. I bought it without a combo back then. Dicks wasn't around back then. Not sure where I bought it.

I have a samurai from about 12-15 yrs ago.  For the $30 or so dollars I paid for it, I thought it was a decent rod (for the money that is).  I still have it (don't use it) and it survived my early days of fishing around ponds.  Good memories.  I got mine at WalMart.
