TeamBerettaGold Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 I am looking into getting a dedicated crankbait rod, currently do not have one. I am looking for a rod that I can cast 1/4 oz small cranks, and the bigger deep divers, like a Fat Free or DD22. I would also like to be able to toss jerk baits, xrap's and the like. Not sure if I sould go with a M or a M/H? Will a medium power rod be able to pull a FFS/DD22 without over loading the rod? Glass or Graph? Basically a rod that will work for any type of bait with a bill on it . Looking to spend up to $250 on the rod. Any recomendations would be great, I am not partial to any rod brand for this setup. Thanks guys and gals. p.s. the reel will be a quantum 8-) Quote
Super User Alpster Posted May 9, 2008 Super User Posted May 9, 2008 Lamiglas XCF705 7' Medium Heavy Cranking Rod. This is the factory rod that uses the blank my custom is built on. Super fiberglass cranking stick. I use it for spinnerbaits also. http://www.***.com/descpageRDCLAMIGLAS-LCPROFG.html# Ronnie Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted May 9, 2008 Super User Posted May 9, 2008 My multi-purpose rod is a St. Croix Avid AC66MF with a soft tip. This would fit your requirements and really shines with topwater and jerkbaits where control is an issue. Although this rod can handle the DD22, if you plan to fish heavy lures and deep divers for extended periods of time, a rod with more backbone is better. I suggest a Lamiglas SR705R which is currently on sale at Cabela's: http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp?id=0037314120919a&type=product&cmCat=SEARCH&returnPage=search-results1.jsp&QueryText=sr705r&N=4887&Ntk=Products&Ntx=mode+matchall&Nty=1&Ntt=sr705r&noImage=0 A third rod I have and you might consider is an Avid AC70MM. This is an outstanding rod for lighter lures, especially Rat-L-Traps and shallow running crankbaits. The Moderate Action allows the rod to load up and cast these lures into another zipcode! 8-) Quote
djmax22 Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 I have the Skeet Reese Lamiglas rod RW linked. It handles deep diver cranks easily and I fish DD22 a lot post-spawn. Something about this rod that just feels right. I am so impressed with this rod I want to get the 7'6" version for lipless cranks. Quote

Branuss04 Posted May 10, 2008 Posted May 10, 2008 I have to 704CB from powell. I mainly throw DD22's on it. Doesn't seem to overload the rod too badly. I also throw x-raps and DT4-12 everyonce in awhile. Quote
fathom Posted May 10, 2008 Posted May 10, 2008 cbr845 will handle 90% of anything with trebles. have heard good things about the skeet rod, as well. Quote
cbfishalot Posted May 11, 2008 Posted May 11, 2008 St. Croix premier glass rod 7'0 M with mod/fast action. It's only $110 and it can handle everything you want it for. Quote
booneangler Posted May 11, 2008 Posted May 11, 2008 i love the David Fritts Cranking Rods that American Rodsmith makes i have three of them. But Fenwick has a good cranking rod out to, you could probably check up on them. Quote
TeamBerettaGold Posted May 12, 2008 Author Posted May 12, 2008 Thank you guys for all of your input! Very helpful. I decided to go with the GLoomis CBR843 paried with a Quantum TE 1160 with 12lb Fluoro. Rod feels sweet! Now I gotta get out a fish it! Thanks again. Quote
