i have an S-L i got around x-mas time.  i recently took it to my reel guy to have it cleaned and lubed.  he does a great job too, and is a big abu fan.  anyway i was surprised to hear that the "pawl" (whatever that is) had to be replaced.  $100 for a reel and it is needing parts replaced after 5-6 months?  is this normal wear and tear?

also i have noticed in my last handful of outings, a brake likes to turn itself on every now and then.  i normally run one brake on and the rest off, unless it is very windy then i run two on.  but sometimes when i am running just one on, i will notice my casts arent going as far, i open the side plate, and another brake is on.

additionally on my last outing over the weekend and tonight, i have noticed a distinct "catch" in the retrieve.  i can feel it catching and it gets a bit harder to turn for a half a crank or so then its back to normal, then a few more cranks and it catches again.

$100 for a reel is alot to me, so i am a bit disappointed with this reel as of late.  i bought a used daiwa reel from a member on here in the flea market, for $50...it is a procaster-z 103HLA (japan model)  if i could find more of these i would buy them in a second.  it casts further than my revo, backlashes less and if i am not mistaken it is also lighter

i am going to take it back to the reel guy to see if possibly he made a mistake or something, but i highly doubt it, and if he did i know he will make it right.  if not and it has another bad part or something, i will have him repair it and i will get rid of it and look for another non-abu reel.

has anyone else experienced any of these issues with their revo?

thanks

Cliff

P.S.  please keep the "if it was a shimano it would be fine" comments to yourself   ;D

Cliff,

If it were a Shima..., OOOHH, Sorry dude! :)

You may need to be sure the brake thingy (I don't know what you call it)  is the right one for the reel or worn out. If it is loose, it will apply itself by centrifugal force. I don't know about the pawl, but ABUs have a reputation for being sturdy reels. Don't give up just yet.

You are the 3rd person on this board to say a brake on the S comes on by itself.  It may represent a problem.  But one thing I've noticed is that the force required to snap one OFF is very high.  So possibly you aren't pushing it down hard enough?

The pawl issue could be what is causing your catching.  Did the reel tech say what was wrong with it?  I can see how that might cause catching.  But I've never heard of a pawl wearing out so quickly.  Did something get in the wormshaft?

'm betting his reel guy is greasing the worm gear and it is gumming up with dirt.

I have seen Abu' that this has been done to and in a 6 month period if the reel is fished hard, it will cause the pawl to wear in a half moon shape you can see.

As far as the catching it is usually crud build up in the (cuts) of the worm gear and the pawl is trying to ride up and out, to cut it's own path.

If the reel is doing this a tooth brush taken and cleaning the worm gear out should take care of the issue. If you notice any new paths being cut on the worm gear then replace the worm gear immediately.

Just my .02¢

I had a Revo Premier and had several issues with it. When I got this reel I had high hopes because of all the hype I had been hearing regarding the Revos. At first this reel was everything I wanted it to be and more. It was light weight, casted extremely well, felt smooth and the drag was good but not great. After a week it started to make some noise towards the end of the cast but it performed fine. Then I started to get backlashes plus the noise. I sent it back to Abu Garcia and when I recieved it , they said that they had serviced it and all should be fine. It was fine for about 3 or 4 casts. Then I started to get the grinding noise again and it did not seem to matter where I put the breaks, it performed with the same amount of breaking power. I then wiped some of the excess oil off of the break side of the spool. This helped but the grinding was louder and finally I started to have problems with the drag slipping. I set the drag the same as I do with all my reels but when I had a fish on (nothing over 4lbs) it would slip and was not smooth at all.

I ended up returning it and getting a Shimano Core. This reel has gotten about 40-50hours of use over the last three weeks and has been flawless.

I would take your Revo back, if you can, get another one and if it does not work out then maybe a Shimano Citica or a Daiwa Advantage would be the ticket.

They can all have problems.  There's a long thread at TackleTour regarding the Core having the same problems as some Revos - roughness and grinding.

The Revo is scarcely a year old.  And who knows whether or not the problems we hear about are on first-run models, or newer reels.

I read the reviews and complaints on the Core and it seemed to pertain to my only complaint as well.  Which is that the Core is not as smooth as I would hope it would be.  It is still smoother than the Premier I owned when it was fresh out of the box and I can't recal anyone saying it was rough like the Revos or that it had grinding, just not smooth for a $300+ reel.  The Premier I had sounded like a coffee grinder and ever worse after I had it serviced by Abu Garcia. What I think the comments on Tackle Tour refered to where the Daiwa guys that have the Steeze and are trying to compare it to the Core.

I do know a couple of guys that have bought the STX this year and love them and they have had zero issues.  But I also know one local tournament fisherman/bait maker that had 5 Revos STXs, three of which he returned with problems and the other two he sold.  He now has 8 Cores.  This guy is the one that convinced me to go with Core.  With that said, I will not be purchasing more than the one I own.  I not convinced this reel is worth $100 more than the 50MG but it is, so far, a perfect match for it's intended purpose, the rod I have it on and my style of fishing.

Just to reiterate what I said about the Premier, I had high hopes for this reel and I do wish that it would have worked out.  I may take a second look at the STX but not for until next year. :)

Ok, ok.  I must have gotten the wrong impression when I read "they are not smooth by no means. They are a little rough on the retrieve and make a grinding noise" and "I've been disappointed with my Core as well. I'm on the verge of taking it back."

Isn't the Shimano Core $300+?

It better not have any problems at the prices I see them going for online.  I'm picking STXs off ebay for $160.  I've had no issues with the STXs.  The SX is a different story.

well i contacted Abu and told them my problems, they said to send it to them and i would receive and invoice for charges in the mail.  they said there is a one year warranty, which my reel falls under, but i have no receipt to prove this, do they have a way to track each reel where it was sold and when?  i would think they would repair it for nothing?  am i assuming too much by this?  i dont know what to do.  if i send it in, how long will they have it?  it would probably be faster(possibly cheaper) to just have my reel guy fix it, sell it, and buy another brand reel, or just go back to a C3 cause i know they are durable and will last.

Red, send it to Abu.  The reel has only been out a little more than a year so most Revos are still under warranty.   Abu will more than likely send you a new reel instead of fixing yours.   I have had perfect service from Abu, even when I sent in a reel without a receipt.  I sent in a Cardinal 500ALB on a Thursday and got a new one on the following Friday (1 week and 1 day).   Abu's service is outstanding.

Maybe those are fish biting and stopping your lure. :)
