how to start to put line on a baitcaster

I use heavy line on small reels to start, added the fact that after a month of re-tying lures, snagging some rocks, etc, I get even lower then I started with line.

Just yesterday, I casted out my entire spool of line on a single cast, if there was no knot tied, bye bye bait.

Just doesn't seem to make sense. Just tie a knot  ;D

and yes, I know I should re-spool  ;D
