BPS Pro Qualifier rods

Bought a 7' HXF last week.  Very pleased with the weight of the rod, handle is a bit short for a 7' rod.  Threw a Revo Premier on it and tied on a C-rig.

Fished it more than any other rig yesterday, have to say I'm pretty d**n disappointed with the rod.  It's about as sensitive as a piece of rebar.  I've got a hella-heavy Fenwick Venture 7' MH that feels better than the PQ.  And that's with braid on the Premier and either a 3/4 oz. or 1/2 oz tungsten weight.

If anything, it's a Pro Disqualifier.  Now relegated to the scrap heap of rods in the corner.

Why not take it back?  You just bought it last week.  

I've got two 7' medium PQs, and I think they are OK, but they don't really compare to my Fenwick HMG or HMXs.   I started out liking the handle, now I don't.   But they weren't bad deals - got them on sale for $59 each.

I bought it mail order.

I'll give it a shot with 7" Mission Fish and see if it does any better with those.  If not, I might throw a roll of duct tape and a couple of 1" nuts on the butt and use it for pitching jigs.

Well, it does much better with 1.5 oz. swimbaits than it does with 3/4 oz. carolina rigs.

Still not too pleased with the rod.  Guess it's my final lesson on BPS rods.  :-X

                Is yours the new style (no fore grip and a hook keeper)? I bought the new 7ft MH and use it for light pitching and t-rigged soft plastics. I'm a bit more of a line watcher. Last week I stuck a good sized fish in a lay down and loved the way it handled the fish. Plenty of back bone. It's spooled with 15lbs Yozuri Hybrid and a Johnny Morris reel. To me it seems light and swift in the hand. Now I'm not saying it's like my Kistler LTA's, but still a great rod for the money.

i love bps rods.i have found them to be every bit as sensitive as other rods on the market that my friends use.

BPS rods are pretty good rods for the money, especially if you get them on sale. They are definately not the best out there but they are still pretty decent for the price.

I prefer most all of the BPS spinning rods with the balancing system because of the handle. I don't like all the other mfg rods with exposed reel seat threads and locking mechanism. The only thing better is the Tennessee handle styles.

Like I said, I have two Pro Qualifiers - 7' medium baitcasters.  I don't like them as much for plastics as I do my Fenwick HMG or Team All Star IM10.   The Powerhump grip, I can take it or leave it.  But it feels pretty good when I have a round reel on the rod.  

Where my rods really shine is for light cranks and jerkbaits.   Some people may think they are too stiff for cranks, but I really like the action and they will flat out fling a 1/4 oz bait.   These are, by far, the best combos I've ever had for crankbaits.  Both of my rods (they are twins) sport Abu EXT Pros with 10# Trilene XL.   Here's one of them with a Roumba.

This is one reason why I won't buy a rod mail order (the other is shipping costs)... I like to get the feel of a rod before I commit to a purchase.

i bought a 6'6" and the rod was like a piece a steel there is a reason they are always on sale for 79.99.  I returned mine and spent double on a loomis but am much happier no buyers remorse unlike any rod that has the bps logo on it. I won't buy another bps ever.

I am not happy with mine either. I just called the local bps and they will except exchanges up to 1 year after date of purchase...I know where I am going saturday

I own two PQ's and three Extreme's and have been very happy with both.  I prefer having a rod with a little more backbone. They're definitely heavier. My buddy has a couple of G. Loomis rods and he just recently bought a Carrot Stick. Not a big fan. They are almost too light in my opinion. I haven't tried the new design yet. I heard they're on sale for $79, so I am definitely going to check them out.

Being that "buddy" with the Loomis rods and the Carrot Stix I can say now that after fishing with the Pro Qualifier for 2 days it's not as sensitive as the Loomis rods or the Carrot and it's certainly not as light.  My lighter rods have just as much backbone as the Pro Qualifier.   I don't even think the Pro Qualifier is comparable to the Loomis rods.  

That said the Pro Qualifier will do for the applications I'm using it for.  I got a 7'0 MH for pitching jigs and it is a good deal at 79 bucks.  Certainly not worth full price but you can't find a better deal on something you plan on beating up.  I've been fishing it with 3/8 jigs the past two days and haven't missed a strike yet.  It's not that bad of a rod.  They new model looks nice and the reel seat is more rubbery than hard plastic.
