basslovr Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 Can anyone share advantages and disadvantages of rear drag reels? I have never used one and was just wondering if it is all just a preference thing or if there is a definite difference in performance? Thanx in advance..... Tight Lines!!!!!! Quote
skillet Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 Rear drag is a lot less smooth than front drag.. As Ever, skillet Quote
Super User RoLo Posted April 30, 2008 Super User Posted April 30, 2008 I once bought a rear-drag spinning reel believing that I could adjust the drag tension while my fingers stayed clear of the fishing line. In hindsight that was a bad decision, because I soon learned that in order to see and adjust the rear-drag, I had to push the rod awkwardly forward. As it turns out, a front-drag system is much easier to reach and see without any wrist contortions. From a mechanical standpoint, the front-drag employs greater clutch area, which makes it a smoother drag, a drag that's easier to adjust and one with a greater lifespan. Super User Team9nine Posted April 30, 2008 Super User Posted April 30, 2008 For me, a rear drag is more convenient to adjust while fighting. But as already mentioned, the best drags tend to be front drags. We are dealing with bass though and not something like a bonefish or barricuda, so the technical differences probably don't matter quite as much. But if you took to chasing carp... : -T9 Quote
basslovr Posted May 1, 2008 Author Posted May 1, 2008 Thank you gentlemen, I certainly appreciate the input.....consequently, I guess I will just stick with my front drag spinning reel......"tried and true"...... So, now on to value for my money. I want to purchase another spinning reel and spend not more than $100. Anybody have any input on a good choice? Thanx again..... Tight Lines!!!! Quote

Nice to see a diverse opinion I own a symmetre and a President. They are both good reels. For some reason I prefer the President a little maybe the Bling factor. Quote
