I'm looking into buying a new b/c reel, I haven't purchased anything new in more than 6 years and was wondering if ya'll had any suggestions.  I've been using an Abu tournament pro, a couple of other abu's and a shimano calcutta

Welcome aboard!

If you look through the first 50 pages of this section you will

find a few suggestions...Otherwise, you need to specify a pricing

point. Then everyone will respond with their favorite reel, which

generally amounts to their favorite brand!

So, to get the ball rolling, here's a $60 suggestion and in-depth review:

There are so many great reels on the market today I refuse to specify just one  :) The Revo S or and any of the Revo line of reels or the Silver Max are just a couple. You will have a hard time deciding on opinions alone on this site. Way to many of them! :o Mike

We need a price range and I'd like to know if you use braid or mono. (for line capacity reasons)

Some of us actually recommend several different brands and models... based on the price range and posted criteria.   :)

Ok, I'm looking in the range of 200 to 300, I have been using mono, but I'm seriously considering the switch to braid for this new rig (flippin/pitchin into heavy cover).  It's gonna go on a 7'1" Mossyback heavy fast tip.  I have a few reels in mind my first choice being the revo stx or premier due to their outstanding drag power, has anyone had any problems or complaints about these reels

Hey!

You know I have the STX, I'm now a Revo Divo!

Back on topic...

In the price range, I would suggest looking at the

Revo STX, fullsize Shimano Chronarch CH100B,

small frame CH50MG and the Shimano CTE200GT

if you will consider a round reel.

For your specific application, I would opt for the

Shimano CTE200GT.

I know one guy burned the drag out of a Revo Premier fishing for Red Drum at Lake Fairfield. The drag on the Premier is not as strong as the STX drag.

When I get a new Flippin reel, it's going to be a Shimano Castaic.

Kent,

Just having fun!

Cypress,

You have a bunch of good options in that price range!  You may have answered your own question with the STX.

I'd also be looking at the Revo (S, SX or STX).  I think even the S is a great reel for your purpose.  They are bigtime stout, have monster drags and are praised by almost all who own them, me included!  I haven't used the STX but it's touted as well worth the cost.  They all hold plenty of line, should you be using heavy mono.

(I also have a Premier but haven't used it long enough to be able to recommend or not.  I like it but some people had mixed reviews initially)

50MG- not one that usually comes to mind in this application but worth discussing...   here is why I like it:  It's light and small for easy palming while flippin and pitching.  It's so smooth, you will love it.  10lbs of drag is more than enough for 99% of the anglers out there.  You can buy the CU100B spool (about $35 for the whole assembly) and instantly have a spare spool with more line capacity when using heavy mono. (it's a direct swap)

Citica or Curado models might also be worth looking at, but act fast to get rebate eligibility.

Everything mentioned can be had for your low end or below the low end of your stated price range.

There are other great reels out there in your range, I just don't have any experience with them and can't make any recommendations.
