JT Bagwell Posted December 18, 2006 Posted December 18, 2006 XPoint is probably the sharpest and toughest hook on the planet. I use them as well as Daiichi. Both are super tough and super durable, but I think XPoint might take the overall championship crown. JT Bagwell Quote
Captain Cali Posted December 18, 2006 Posted December 18, 2006 I use Owners first and Gamakatsu second. Gammies are usually easier to find. I will be trying the XPoint and Daiichi hooks next year. Quote
Super User RoLo Posted December 18, 2006 Super User Posted December 18, 2006 Comparing today's premium hooks is like splitting hairs! It's important to understand the ramifications of jumping to another brand of hook. A new hook brand usually means different reentry points, different centers of gravity and different fall rates. In my opinion, those factors alone far outstrip any illusory benefit of some new brand. If you're using Gamakatsu, Owner, Xpoint or Daiichi, I believe that any problem you may experience cannot be blamed on the hook. Roger Quote
dizzy5868 Posted December 18, 2006 Posted December 18, 2006 I use Eagle claw laser and Matzuo, Matzuo makes a strong and very sharp hook, I tend to use alot of sickle style hooks, I found I loose less fish with them. Rob Quote
NEBassMan Posted December 19, 2006 Posted December 19, 2006 I used Gamakatsu for the last few years, but found myself using more and more Owners hooks the second half of this year. I really like them, very sharp! Jason Quote
rocknfish9001 Posted December 19, 2006 Posted December 19, 2006 Most of my hooks now are gamakatsu. Although i did find that mustad ultra point hooks are pretty great themselves. I saw a comercial where they scrape them on wood and they were "still sharp". I tried it myself, put some gnarly scrapes in a block of wood, and still sharp enough to stick to your fingernail. I was impressed. I learned that high quality hooks were super important the wrong way. I went to Lake Magician here in southwest MI earlier this year, and got skunked and watched everybody outfish me. I had more bites, and less fish. Same thing happened at Indian Lake, Pipestone Lake, and at the St. Joe river. I thought my hookset needed work, my rod wasnt stiff enough, my line was too stretchy. Guess what, never came to think that those walmart brand jigheads and year old eagle claw hooks were to blame. Quote
Rattlinrogue Posted December 19, 2006 Posted December 19, 2006 I used Gammys for years, but switched to EC LazerSharps and really prefer them.I use Daiichi Finese hooks for dropshotting. Quote
jomatty Posted December 19, 2006 Posted December 19, 2006 i think x points are the best although i use a lot of owners and also gammies. im kinda lazy and i like being able to stop at the tackle store and pick up some hooks when im low. guess its easier to get online and order em but i still seem to prefer just stopping in and picking some up. matt Quote
Vyron Posted December 19, 2006 Posted December 19, 2006 I use Owners first and Gamakatsu second. Gammies are usually easier to find. I will be trying the XPoint and Daiichi hooks next year. Same here Quote
hi_steel_basser Posted December 20, 2006 Posted December 20, 2006 I really don't understand why more people haven't said Mustad. The ultra point is as sharp and durable as anything around. Gammys are OK, and owners are good, too, but I have caught more fish on mustads than any other brand. I do like owner trebles when I'm replacing crankbait hooks, but most of my worm and jig fishing has a mustad fish sticker on the end. 8-) Quote
rocknfish9001 Posted December 20, 2006 Posted December 20, 2006 Hey, i talked about mustad ultra point hooks. Quote
