The last couple years I've been throwing buzz baits and spinners from my spinning reels (All I have :) ). Is this a disadvantage and would I catch more fish by throwing these from a baitcaster?

My uncle, who I often fish with, has caught a bunch of bass on spinnerbaits thrown from spinning reels. So I'm not sure if it makes much difference.

Also, any advice on the best way to fish spinnerbaits and buzzbaits? I would like to catch more fish on these but can't seem to figure out the trick.

Any help on either of these matters would be awesome.

Spinning gear can work fine for these baits. BUT the biggest problem is accuracy. It is harder to throw a spinnerbait right up on the structure with spinning gear. But it can be done.

If thats all you got, practice away and you should have no problems.

Well, it doesn't matter to the bass whether you catch them on spinning tackle or baitcasting gear. For the most part, "where you fish" is much more important than "how you fish". Target structure and cover.

The next step involves technique. With both lures, varying your speed of retrieve is one suggestion. With spinnerbaits, fishing at different depths is another idea. Although I don't like to place much emphasis on color, sometimes this comes into play, too.

Thanks,

Being a college student, I barely have money to stock up on the tackle I need for this season. No way I could afford even a decent baitcasting combo.

What are some of your guys favorite buzzbait colors?

Last year I had good luck with the 3/8 oz Cavitron, black on black.

It helps to smack them into cover. Try running your buzzbaits and spinnerbaits into stickups and over surface cover to make some noise and get a reaction bite. I sometimes pitch spinnerbaits and let them fall next to cover like a jig. Big Colorado blades work best for this. Give it a try.

The lake I usually fish has a lot of lilypad cover. Do you want to throw spinners/buzzbaits across this kind of cover, or run it horizontally in front or behind it?

YES!! :)
