NOVAbasskid Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 I recently purchased a Revo S based off of reviews on another site that it in fact casts further than both the sx and stx. But there is more to a reel than casting distance. I have not yet thrown my revo s, but plan to this weekend on Lake Weiss and Guntersville but was wondering what experiences with the Revos other people have had specifically compared against other reels within the Revo lineup. Thanks in advance and tight lines hope everyone is excited for the spawn. Quote
pk Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 Cast further with the S? You should have more control over the brakes with the SX and STX so I'd think you could cast those further. But I don't think you can really go wrong with any Revo. I personally prefer the STX and Premier because of the Infinity II spool design, which disengages the spool from the drive train for longer and easier casts. My buddy has an SX and even though I've only casted it a few times that performed well. The S would be my last choice of all the Revos. Though I still think it's a great reel. My major qualm with the S is that you can't adjust the brakes like you can on the SX, STX, and Premier. Quote
NOVAbasskid Posted April 16, 2008 Author Posted April 16, 2008 I've got a friend who works for purefishing (company who owns abu garcia, fenwick, berkely etc.) who confirmed the review on another site that the s cast further let me quote his explanation "As a matter of fact, many people prefer the S over any of the other reels due to the centrifugal brake. The SX and STX are equipped with magnetic brakes, which often become more difficult and thus less efficient to fish with." This confirmed what was said at another site "I too mase the comparison between the Revo models and arrived at same opinion as expressed here that the S model casts / pitched better with greater distance. Good news was I did this before I purchased." The general conclusion seems to be its because of the specific break systems the s can cast further than the rest. But that's all besides the point I was hoping there would be some people with some personal experience with the S as well as the SX and/or STX that could provide an overall comparative evaluation. pk Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 There's tons of Revo posts in the archives. A quick search through them may find you whatever answer you're looking for. Quote
Super User Micro Posted April 16, 2008 Super User Posted April 16, 2008 I have two of each (two S, two SC, two SX and two STX). The S casts as well as any of them - except maybe the STX which may have a slight edge in casting ability. But what the S may lack in casting distance over the STX, it makes up for in a more effective brake. The magnetic brake on the SC/SX/STX/Premier provides a range of braking force from very moderate to none. If you rely on the brake on a reel, the Revo S is the way to go. It may be less accessible than the brake on the STX, but it does provide much more effective braking IMO. The cast issue is a bugaboo. At normal fishing distances, I don't think there is a practical difference between the S and STX. The brake on the S is more effective. So I think the S is the more practical reel. It's certainly less expensive. The STX seems a little more refined, has nicer amenities, but it costs 100% more than the S and only offers a little better performance. Nevertheless, the STX is my favorite. But you can't go wrong with an S. It's a terrific reel. Quote
NOVAbasskid Posted April 16, 2008 Author Posted April 16, 2008 thanks thats exactly what i was looking for my thumbs still isn't all that educated so i definitely do need a little help from the breaks. tight lines and go hokies never forget. Quote
Masshole Mike Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 i have an S and an SX, and while i've only used the S a few times i find that it casts just as well as the SX, maybe a little bit better depending on lure weight/wind conditions/etc. both are great reels. i prefer the external brake control on the SX simply for it's ease of use, but for the money the S can't be beat. NOVAbasskid Posted April 21, 2008 Author Posted April 21, 2008 just an update on the topic i started with my own review of the revos after a weekend down in alabama using them. i fished the revo s all weekend and liked it a lot to be honest real smooth and powerful (pulled a five and a half pounder on probably the 5th cast i made with it out of some grass like a champ). as far as comparing it to another my partner was using an sx and complained because the line guide on it (part on worm gear that the line actually threads through into first guide, dont know the name of the part) kept coming out of the real and down his line which bothered him to know in and he was ready to throw it into the water after a while. but that really did sound like a problem in his specific reel and doubt its common to the whole sx line, other than that i think he was happy with it. i'd definitely recommend the revo s after this weekend. tight lines Quote

One thing I would like to ad here is that with the S you wont need your thumb to control the cast if you have it fine tuned. Here is what works best for me and others I have talked to who own the Revo S. Set the brakes with two on across from each other and you will probably not have to change it again. Next set the free spool so that the lure will fall easily about 14" at a time with a gentle shake of the rod tip, not all the way to the ground! You set that with your spool tension knob. When you cast let the bait hang down about 6" from the rod tip. Make your cast as usual but do not feather the reel spool with your thumb. Use the thumb only to hold the spool while making the cast, Let it go free spool. After a couple cast watch the spool as it's casting and see if the string looks like it's trying to raise off the spool or "birds nest" then tighten the tension knob just a "hair" and try it again. You wont believe how beautiful and how far you can cast that way with no back lashes at all. The only setting you will have to check and maybe change is the tension knob depending on what lure you are using. With this setup I can cast a lure weighing less than 1/2 oz about 45 yards + - . Hope this helps, Mike Quote
