I just picked up an 8wt 9' St.Croix Fly Rod and Reel that I intend to try out  this season for Large Mouth back at my lake.

I was told it is a different experience, which I believe would be the case.

It was an awesome deal on the rod/reel with case and line so I bought it. No I have to learn......

Has anyone ever fly fished for Bass, If so point me in the right direction.

I did a search on here and didn't find anything.

Thanks in Advance

Here's the best place I've found to buy bass flies. You can't beat the prices, and the service I've received has been top notch. Shipping is free if your order is over $35.

Check out the Rabitt Strip Divers. These have been the best producers for me. Get the largest size. You can also throw one of these on a spinning rod, once it gets soaked all the way through.

The Dilg Slider has also been good. And the Bouface. Both of these in the largest sizes.

Alot of folks recommend some kind of popper, but I've done a lot better with the ones I mentioned. The topwater bite is not always there.

Cheers,

I have a friend here in MD that guides for bass on a top water bite,  in the evenings,  all summer.

I love fly fishing for bass and panfish!  It was a fun skill to learn and the bite/fight is great!  I love the feeling of brining in a bass while stripping the line.

Now the one negative is that the bass tend to be smaller than the lunkers caught on traditional equiptment.  Smaller baits etc.  I tend to catch many 2-3 pound bass. And a lot of 1 pounders when fishing for panfish.

Either way it is a lot of fun.  Poppers are my favorite  but my largest at 4 pounds was caught on a frog.

Here are a few links for you to cruise through.

With that 8wt rod you are going to be able to toss some larger fish lures :)

Wow thats a long wait lol  At least it will give you time to practice your casting.  The tip that helped me the most was to "accelerate to a stop" on the back and forward casts.

Also did you pick out a good line yet? or did the setup come with one already?

Now when you are ready to tie on the flies, you dont really need a tippet either.  Just use a mono or floro leader.  For largemouth, a tippet doesnt make a difference unlike when fishing trout.

Catching a bass on a flyrod is a real thrill, less mechanical than baitcasting or spinning, more hands on.  I've always used poppers but have been experimenting with wets recently.  Can't overstress the importance of the line though.  Suggest a good quality bass bug taper in your rod weight.  You don't have to replace them very often so don't be afraid to pony up $60 or so for a good one.

Joan Wulff has the definitive book on flyfishing, see if you can find it at your local library.  Also, if you're not already proficient, hire a pro to spend an hour with you for one-on-one training.  Money well spent.

Don't let anyone else know about flyfishing for bass, it's just our little secret!   :)

Lefty Kreh also has a book called "flyfishing for bass" that covers largemouth and Terry Wilson's "Largemouth Bass Fly-Fishing: Beyond the Basics"

I read the one by lefty and it was pretty good.  Havent read Wilson's though.
