Super User gim Posted April 28, 2020 Super User Posted April 28, 2020 Do muskie setups count? My st croix muskie mojo paired with a Calcutta D reel is the highest priced setup I own. Quote
Super User WRB Posted April 28, 2020 Super User Posted April 28, 2020 2008 members could not conceive today's high end bass rods and reels exceding $600 each! I look at prices being what folks can afford not what works to catch bass, it isn't relative. Tom 3 Quote

Tom Technically the same can be said with anything in life such as expensive baseball bats don't make one a better hitter, expensive golf clubs don't make one a better player, expensive shotguns don't make one a better shot but those things can make the sport more enjoyable to the person using that equipment. When I was in college a $200 baseball bat was super high end, now my daughter plays on teams with $400 softball bats and she's 11. 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted April 28, 2020 Super User Posted April 28, 2020 I caught hundreds of giant bass using reels and rod I no longer use today. My go to reel was 4500C 80's vintage before instant anti reverse bearings were invented, price about $75. My rods were Lamiglas custom a graphite cost about $100 and line Big Game mono, orice under $7 for 600 yards. In 1980's $ $175 per combo. I upgraded the reels in the early 90'scto Daiwa TD HTSA's at $150 per reel using the same rods and line catching 4 of my 5 PB bass listed. The combo's being $250 each. How does anyone compare today $1200 combo to 90's $250? It's like comparing a $300 shot gun to a $3,000 shot gun, fluff not function. Tom 1 Quote

Tom, the curmudgeon I look at some of these combos and shudder - one rig costs more than my canoe and trailer combined...and they have more than one of these rigs. If I had that kind of money, I'd be in a used Lund, Tracker or Sylvan instead of a plastic canoe and still be using my 'cheap' gear. Quote
FishinBuck07 Posted April 28, 2020 Posted April 28, 2020 All my casting combos are around the $250 price mark, spinning combos are well below that price mark! Quote
Super User J Francho Posted April 28, 2020 Super User Posted April 28, 2020 I don't fish my most expensive rod and reel together, but if I did, it would be a JDM Zillion and a Champ Extreme, so around $700ish. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted April 28, 2020 Super User Posted April 28, 2020 Most expensive conventional setup is in the $400 range. Fly rod I have a couple combos that retailed around 1k Quote
Super User NYWayfarer Posted April 28, 2020 Super User Posted April 28, 2020 Retail: Lew’s Pro Ti Speed Spool SLP $349.99 Lew’s TP 1 Black Speed Stick $129.99 Paid $230.00 for the reel, DSG price match. Paid $100 for the rod on sale. 1 Quote
Hook2Jaw Posted April 28, 2020 Posted April 28, 2020 I got that new Shakespeare Frozen 2 combo for 14.99. One piece, so I'm not worried about the reel seat breaking. Only two guides, so wind knots don't happen. This son of a gun has a 2:1 reel on it so it's nasty for pulling big, deep cranks and letting a mambojohambo get a good look at it before the slurpage. It's so low profile that I can keep my thumb on the drag control and if she gets too feisty, a press of a button lets her run and wear herself out. 10/10, would recommend over any Loomis rod, Daiwa Steez, or Shimano Chronarch. 1 1 Quote

Gear shaming is weird and cringey whether it's done looking up or whether it's done looking down. You have no idea what you'd buy if you had "that type of money", but the odds are very good that you'd be buying shinier things. Don't bother arguing about it 'cause nobody here will believe you. Whip up a nice Kale smoothie, take a sip, relax, and enjoy what you've got. It's all good. 6 Quote

Super User J._Bricker Posted April 28, 2020 Super User Posted April 28, 2020 During our fishing lives we all buy IMHO at least one rod and/or reel that is the most monetarily that we can afford. This better equipment may or may not make you a better fisherman initially, but over time it becomes part of the overall puzzle as one becomes a better angler. As far as I’m concerned, having that one “sweet” setup makes my time on the water that much more enjoyable and makes me look forward to the next trip. Especially now... Quote

Never my intention - you want to spend that kind of money on rods/reels...go for it. I'm just stating what I would do with that amount. Don't assign thoughts to me that I don't have. 2 Quote
DomQ Posted April 28, 2020 Posted April 28, 2020 I have a casitas and an fenwick HMG that costs about 10,000 canadian but after I convert it into USD it's like 150 bucks, man the canadian dollar sucks 2 Quote

I agree, obviously I have Ultra high end stuff, but I have what most beginner would call beginner setups that I enjoy using also, for instance I have the New Ugly Stick Carbons that I believe are 70 bucks per rod. As long as you catch fish I dont judge even if your using a cane pole. 1 Quote
mrpao Posted April 28, 2020 Posted April 28, 2020 I really enjoy looking at other people's expensive gear. I have nice gear myself, and could have nicer gear if I wanted. I just like to see how people have their stuff setup. Quote
