bassripper2000 Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 Hello All I am having a terrible time deciding on two reels. I have many shimano's and love them all but wanted to try Daiwa to see what's up. I am looking for a crossover reel for LMB and light saltwater duty (Spotted Bay Bass, Calicos, Halibut, and whatever else that is biting). I have read the TT reviews on both reels several times and needed some opinions on the following 1. Daiwa Zillion 2. TD advantage HSTA Supertuned I have a curado for the light stuff but I would throw 1/4oz and above So I'm leaning towared the Zillion because it has CRRB and safe for the salt, but wanted to know if it can handle like unweighted senkos or other plastics. From the read, it seams that on paper the HSTA has is better overall and cheaper. Also, are the drags really crappy.... should I go Daiwa or just stick to my Curado's anc Calcuttas. Cananyone comment on the performance, I notice a lot of people get the Zillion and I end up seeing them for sale on various boards. Is that in indicator of something? I dunnoo.... Thanks for any info on the subject. Also, I will not go to any other brands even if it has 22lbs of insane drag pressure! Quote
wagn Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 I didn't vote because I haven't used both reels so I can't make a fair comparison. I can tell you I love my Zillion, and it can throw weightless senko's with no problem. It's not a cheap reel but it is definitely a quality set-up Quote
Ballistik Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 I own all shimanos but I have the oportunity to use all of Michbass's Zillions ( Crazy crankr, Super High Speed and the 6:3 -1 , along with his steeze ) and they are awesome reels. Smooth, extremely palmable, and cst great. Cant go wrong with a Diawa's upper lines. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted April 17, 2008 Super User Posted April 17, 2008 I have a high speed Zillion and love it so far. Great reel. Quote
Red Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 i dont know much about the two reels you mention, but my daiwa procaster-z will out cast my revo anyday of the week. Quote
Super User Gone_Phishin Posted April 17, 2008 Super User Posted April 17, 2008 I own a Zillion, but not the HSTA. Given what I know about the Zillion and what I've read about the HSTA, and the criteria you want to meet, my vote goes for the Zillion. From what you said, it sounds like you're after a heavyduty reel. The Zillion is it. It has great line capacity, tuff gearing, and a rock-solid feel. Unweighted Senkos are very heavy, you won't have a problem there. On a few outings last season, I used my Zillion 100SHLA on a 6'6" M rod for 1/4oz+ T-rigs. The Zillion handled them very well. I'd recommend it for anything but finesse work. My first Zillion did go back to the store. It had the very loud buzz/whirring noise that some have experienced. Quote

Well since you already have curado's and calcuttas why dont you just stick w/ those? For salt I have a preferrence for shimano because it reels can get more damage due to corrosion. Just send in the reel to shimano for service after every season and they will fix and replace the parts that are needed. The few times I had to bring them in they only charge me for the cleaning/service, parts were free!!!! I had bought a used torium that was never serviced so I brought it in to get it serviced. Not only did they not charged me for parts, both side plates were replace, bearings, drags, gears were all new. so basically I got a new reel. Service like that keeps me coming for more but I am open-minded and have a daiwa alphas ito. Unless you know how to service your own reels I wouldn't use daiwa for salt because I have heard from numerous tackleshop owners and fellow fisherman that if you bring the reels back to daiwa to service you can walk out of there w/ a big bill. Something tells me you are just iching to get another reel just to get it. ;D In that case get one of those for bass fishing. If money wasn't the issue I think the zillion seems like it a much better quality reel when I was playing w/ it at the tackleshop. Quote
