Super User roadwarrior Posted April 16, 2008 Super User Posted April 16, 2008 Well... "I don't need no stinkin Shimano Reels" 8-)
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted April 16, 2008 Super User Posted April 16, 2008 I really wanted to stay out of this, but here goes. In fishing as well as everything in life, people are going to think what they use is the best. Those that fish with Shimano think they are the best. Those that drive Chevy's think they are the best. Those that wear Nike's think they are the best. Those that play Titleist irons think they are the best. Those that use Goodyear tires think they are the best. Well I think you get the point. I have heard this reliable, with stood the test of time, this that and the other until I am sick of it. Abu has been making fishing reels as long or longer than Shimano, yet because they design a new reel, the Revo, people say "Let's see how they hold up over time" Why? Abu has been around forever. Why when Shimano redesigned the Curado was this question not asked. I know the "possee" is going to think I am talking nonsense, but I was once where you were as well. I fished Shimano's for 8-10 years, then decided to give Daiwa's a try. Was there anything wrong with my SHimano's? NO. I was just willing to give something else a try. After having made the switch, there are actually a few things that I like better about the Daiwa's. But I will never say that Shiamano makes a bad reel. They make a great reel. But those who use Shimano's don't want to think that there are other reels out there that are as good or better. In the end it all comes down to personal preference. Same as with trucks, shoes, golf clubs, or tires. It all depends on what you prefer. Because generally what we prefer, we also preceive as better, when that may not always be the case.
tyrius. Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 Because generally what we prefer, we also preceive as better, when that may not always be the case. Well said. I'm merely trying to figure out why this backplay "issue" weighs so heavily on some people's minds. I honestly can not think of a situation where it would negatively affect the reel's ability to function.
Guest muddy Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 He Ty some guys think it can cost hookups when setting the hook :
Super User roadwarrior Posted April 16, 2008 Super User Posted April 16, 2008 What do you use RW? Just trying to lighten up the thread... I fish Shimano, but... I recently received a Revo STX as a gift... So, now I'm a Divo Revo, too! :
bronzeback01 Posted April 16, 2008 Author Posted April 16, 2008 RW if the play is engineered into the reel to "protect the gearing"why doesn't the 650.00 stella have any play in the handle or rotor ?
Mike-in-WV Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 Well said jbdaiwafan! Some people feel that there should not be any play or slop in there reel for the money they paid for it. Whats it hurt?, maybe nothing but that's not the point. For the money you pay for a decent reel today the engineering should be just about flawless. If Shimono Say's they built that slop into there handle on purpose I find it very hard to swallow but I'm not an engineer or even close so it could be possible. The bottom line is try one before you buy it and if it bothers you don't buy it or take it back right away and get your money back. Shimono has been manufacturing reels for many years and I will not knock them but I sure wont say they are the best either. Mike

Don't know, but it could be a marketing ploy to make some people think it's now a "better reel". I have three of the old, shabby Stella FBs and they all have a little give. 8-)
Super User Grey Wolf Posted April 16, 2008 Super User Posted April 16, 2008 This is almost as bad as a dicussion on religon or politics.
tyrius. Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 He Ty some guys think it can cost hookups when setting the hook : Ahh, so it's a "confidence" thing? Good thing I don't put much stock in that either. Maybe I'll go check my Citica's and Symetre to see how much line actually released during the backplay. My guess is that it would be in the fractions of an inch. Yeah THAT is going to affect setting a hook.
tyrius. Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 For the money you pay for a decent reel today the engineering should be just about flawless. If you are saying that you're not even close to an engineer then why do you "find it very hard to swallow" and/or "all that slop"? What's the basis for that opinion?
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted April 16, 2008 Super User Posted April 16, 2008 The "play" is designed into the reel to protect the gearing. Other companies have decided this is not important to them. This has nothing to do with engineering tolerances or craftmanship, it is a feature Shimano feels is important. RW, do you have any evidence to back up this claim?
Super User roadwarrior Posted April 16, 2008 Super User Posted April 16, 2008 Nothing more than conversations with Shimano representatives. I suspect David Green has tired of this thread, but if he happens to see this question, he might address the issue.
Super User Raul Posted April 16, 2008 Super User Posted April 16, 2008 You don 't like Shimano ? -----> Don 't buy Shimano
Super User Alpster Posted April 16, 2008 Super User Posted April 16, 2008 You don 't like Shimano ? -----> Don 't buy Shimano I'd say that pretty much covers it.

Super User Raul Posted April 16, 2008 Super User Posted April 16, 2008 Well it's that time again fellas :who wants some? With butter ? cuz if it ain 't with butter don 't count me in.
