FishGuitBeer Posted April 8, 2008 Posted April 8, 2008 I bought my two youngest sons, Daiwa spinning combos. I bought 6,8 and 12lb test BPs excell. Using the Berkley spooling station, I've spooled both with 6 and then 8lb, the line keeps flying off the spool, causing mayhem, frustration and unhappy fishing kids. I put the 12 on my Revo, no problem, put the 8 on my oldests spinning reel, no problem. Any ideas? :-/ Quote
Super User .ghoti. Posted April 8, 2008 Super User Posted April 8, 2008 The Berkley spooling station is good for baitcasters, but has the spool oriented wrong for spinning reels. To spool up a spinning reel 1 run the line through all the guides 2 tie the line to the spool using an arbor knot 3 lay the spool flat on the floor under the tip of the rod, holding the rod parallel to the floor 4 keeping tension on the line with your fingers, make about ten cranks 5 drop the rod tip towards the floor. if the line twists up when you drop the tip, flip the spool over. 6 finish filling the reel up, stopping about 1/8" from the lip. 7 spray down the line on the spool with KVD line conditioner 8 allow to dry overnight 9 go fishin Cheers, GK Quote
FishGuitBeer Posted April 8, 2008 Author Posted April 8, 2008 Something is whacked with the way this line is coiled on these jumbo spools. I just spooled both of them and as soon as you open the bail one or twice, line just flys off, wraps around the handle, body etc. I'm buying braid for them tomorrow...end of problem. Quote
Triangle Sport Posted April 10, 2008 Posted April 10, 2008 The Berkley doesn't work with spinning reel spools as you have found out. The advice you've gotten will work fine. If you've got a lot of equipment, the Cyclone Pro handles everything without any twist. Get your club to buy one so you can all use it. Quote
Super User islandbass Posted April 10, 2008 Super User Posted April 10, 2008 Is there any chance there is too much line on the spool? Typically one only needs to fill it up to 1/8" from the top. Another possibility is that the line might be spool backward. Quote
rokibass Posted April 10, 2008 Posted April 10, 2008 I have experienced bad line twist in the past with Trilene. No matter wich way I would face the spool I got horrible line twist. Once I change over to Suffix line I've had no problems at all, and the line is still straight after the the fishing season. Try Suffix you'll never look back. Rokibass Quote
Super User Alpster Posted April 10, 2008 Super User Posted April 10, 2008 Before you re-spool, take the rig out in the yard and send one of your kids out with the end of the line to peel off all the line. Just retrieve the line through the grass with a little tension between your fingers. That should remove the twists. Try this before you change line. Braided line will twist also if you spool it wrong. JMHE Ronnie Quote
NBR Posted April 10, 2008 Posted April 10, 2008 Ghoti is right on with the spooling method and I accent the Berkley spooling station is worse than poor for spooling spinning reels. I have used big spool Berkley line for years and I have never found any problem with XL or XT. I didn't care for the Iron Silk nor the original flourocarbon but I now use Transition on two bait casters and like it real well. Last year I tried BPS XPS and have had no trouble. You migh be slipping the drag while you spool the line and this will cause terrible line twisting. I forgot to tighten the drag one spring when respooling and it took me a few seconds maybe minutes to figure out what causing all the line twist. Quote
FishGuitBeer Posted April 11, 2008 Author Posted April 11, 2008 Re-spooled with spiderwire, everyone fished today at the pond down the road (while dad worked) with no issues...........problem solved Quote
