Super User FishTank Posted April 7, 2008 Super User Posted April 7, 2008 My Revo Premier got it's first real test today and I noticed that when I adjusted the brakes around half way to max, it made a weird noise as the spool slowed and the lure hit the water. I can only describe the noise as a high pitch grind. Is this normal for the Linear Magnetic Braking system on the Premier, STX and SX? Other than the noise, it performed flawlessly. It has so much power that it seems like overkill and it also did an outstanding job casting. I caught several bass between 1lb-3lbs today and none of them seemed like much of a challenge for this reel. I was just concerned about the noise. I never noticed it with any other reel I have ever used. Quote
Daiwa Posted April 7, 2008 Posted April 7, 2008 I had this same problem with my baitcaster. Check the end of the rod tip. Make sure the eyelets not cutting into the line. Also check the line. Quote

Super User Bassn Blvd Posted April 7, 2008 Super User Posted April 7, 2008 Mine did it right out of the box. Sent it back to Cabella's and they sent me a new one. I have been using the new one now flawlessly for a month, until today. Started squeeching again. SFlBassaddict had it happen to him on two of the Premiers also. As far as I know, no one has been able to determine the problem. I think I will call ABU directly and see I don't understand is up. And yes it has been oiled. Quote
Super User Gatorbassman Posted April 7, 2008 Super User Posted April 7, 2008 Noise from the Premier is a very common problem. I would contact the store you bought it from and see if they will help you out. Or contact Abu and ask them. If you can't get any help just take it back and exchange it for a STX. Quote
Bass XL Posted April 7, 2008 Posted April 7, 2008 And it's not just on the premier. My 'S' has been doing it for a while now. Quote

If ABU don't make super good by permanently fixing it and throwing a goody in, then I'm done. Back to full time Shimano. I'll try the Core out. Light reels are so nice. I'm actually considering selling my Zillion to buy the Core. Quote

I cleaned it real good, and still had the problem. I may just go take it to a tackle shop here and see what they can do. Quote
Super User 5bass Posted April 7, 2008 Super User Posted April 7, 2008 Were you throwing heavy baits? My Premiers will make a sound like a rocket taking off when I throw a 3/4 oz jig or something else in the 1/2 to 3/4 oz range. I can't tell that the sound affects performance at all. Quote

That's what fixed it for me. Quote
Super User Micro Posted April 7, 2008 Super User Posted April 7, 2008 Premier uses different bearings than the other Revos. The Premier uses unshielded HPCR bearings, the other Revos use shielded stainless steel bearings. That probably accounts for the noise. Not once have I ever heard anyone state the noise affects performance. It's just a characterisitic they've noticed. I've heard other reels used by Pros screaming, too, and it must be loud to be picked up by a camera/sound-recorder on another boat. BTW, I've never gotten that noise in any of my Revos, including the S. They will whizz when casting, though. Quote

I was throwing a weightless fluke. Have not thrown anything weighing more than 1/4 ounce on it. Quote
