wishin4fishin Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 I'm thinking about stepping up to a Loomis rod, (casting) and have leveled my sights on the IMX series. GLX would be great, but for about $100 less I'd be getting a rod that is still head and shoulders above the GL series based on what I've read on these forums. I'm expecting to have to pay about $245. But I'm not sure which model to get. I want an all around do-it-all-rod, probably 6.5 feet long that can throw 1/4 to 3/4 oz. I'd like to be able to handle jigs, plastics, a little bit of everything. Suggestions? Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted March 6, 2008 Super User Posted March 6, 2008 If you would consider a 7' rod, the MBR844C is THE BOMB! 8-) Quote
Super User flechero Posted March 6, 2008 Super User Posted March 6, 2008 Since you want 6'6" I'd have to suggest the MBR784. I have owned several of them. It was my dedicated t-rig rod for many years. Suitable for all but the real heavy jigs as well, by most opinions. Quote

Super User Jig Man Posted March 6, 2008 Super User Posted March 6, 2008 I am sure that there are subtle differences in rod taper but the main difference is one is 6.5' and the other is 7'. Like rw said the 844 is a great rod. Quote
Super User Alpster Posted March 6, 2008 Super User Posted March 6, 2008 If I could only have one rod, it would be the MB844. You can't go wrong, no matter which one you choose. Ronnie Quote
Super User flechero Posted March 6, 2008 Super User Posted March 6, 2008 Yes and no. In theory it should only be a difference in length but they actually fish & feel a little different, IMO. The 844 has a more delicate tip and a little different working feel. You'll definitely want to hold both side by side before you make a decision, have someone hold the tips and pull back on them- you'll see what I mean about the different feel. Both are great rods, no doubt, but just different enough that you should feel both before dropping the $$. Quote
Josey Wales Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 Ive been hooked on the Bronzebacks lately. SMR823C-SB I have 7 Loomis rods myself everything from a GL-3 to a GLX, Obiously the GLX is my fav, but the bronzebacks are excellent as well. Quote
Redsyn Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 Shop around and you can get a GLX for that price. Quote
d.hark Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 Shop around and you can get a GLX for that price. Yep maybe new for that. But if you check the buy sell boards you can find used in the $200 range. I picked up a 782 GLX for $200 and a 844glx for $225 both mint!! Look around Quote
Ballpark Frank Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 My favorite all-purpose rod is the MBR783C IMX. I am still trying to figure out what it can't do, maybe throwing big swimbaits. Quote
wishin4fishin Posted March 6, 2008 Author Posted March 6, 2008 Shop around and you can get a GLX for that price. Did you mean new or used? If I could find a GLX rod in the 245 price range I'd grab it. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted March 6, 2008 Super User Posted March 6, 2008 Shop around and you can get a GLX for that price. Really? Where? I have never found a "deal". Quote
Super User FishTank Posted March 6, 2008 Super User Posted March 6, 2008 Shop around and you can get a GLX for that price. Really? Where? I have never found a "deal". At the last day of the Boat, Sport and Travel Show here in Indy various vendors had Loomis rods 30% off or more. I saw I guy buy a MBR844C GLX for around $220. These were brand new, fresh in the rod tube and not demo rods. Unfortunately, I did not come prepared to shop for rods. The MBR844C would also be my rod of choice. Quote
Redsyn Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 Shop around and you can get a GLX for that price. Really? Where? I have never found a "deal". Well its a local tackle shop in my neck of the woods here in Los Angeles. I bought a IMX mbr843 for about 180-190 and a loomis dropshot rod about the same price. I asked him one time how much it would cost to get glx he said around $260. Also whats great about that place is he said if I bring in a imx rod used, give him $50 bucks or so he'll let me trade for another imx model. I know I can get a new rod replaced from loomis for $50 but I dont think they will let you get a different model do they? Quote

Fishtank, so would you say the best deals come from the first days or so or the last day? I'm asking because there is a boat/tackle show here and I'm not sure which day should I go for the best deals. Also where should I look for the best deals? I'm guessing cash would be better to bargain at those places? Thanks by the way I'm still hurting for you on the deal you could of had w/ the rod and reel combos ;D Quote
allenriddle Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 I'd go with the MBR783C based on your description. The MBR844C gets raved about like crazy, I plan on getting one this year myself. But my first Loomis was the MBR783 and I bought it for exactly what you are talking about. If you check it out on Loomis's site, you will see that it is rated EXACTLY for what you listed. It is medium powered, and fast action. It is rated for 1/4 to 3/4oz lures. I throw worms and jigs a lot, and this rod is perfect for all around fishing. If you fish a lot of heavy cover, I'd go with the 844C. Quote
Josey Wales Posted March 7, 2008 Posted March 7, 2008 Get a part time job at like a gander mtn or something during the winter. I applied at one when I lived in Kalamazoo for a time and the manager said that they recieved close to 60% off G-Loomis rods. I dont know how much truth there is to it, cause I got a job over in the Detroit area and moved shortly after. But here in michigan where the weather stops ya in winter it would make sense if possible to make money and get sick discounts. I didnt see any Loomis deals at our fishing show, but then again I wasnt looking that hard either. Good luck Quote
SneakySnook Posted March 7, 2008 Posted March 7, 2008 If you would consider a 7' rod, the MBR844C is THE BOMB!I have to agree. You should take a look at this rod. 8-) Quote

You should take a look at this rod. 8-) I'm seriously considering the MBR844C, but at $270 (Cabelas or BPS) I just don't know how I'm going to explain to the wife. :-/ I've looked on some auctions on EBay, but I'm reluctant to buy used. Anybody know where to get this rod new at a better price than $270? I read the earlier posts, but I wouldn't know where to start looking here in central KY. Quote
M_Fields. Posted March 7, 2008 Posted March 7, 2008 Wishin4Fishin, About 3 weeks ago I bought the MBR844C IMX. I look forward to using this rod. I personally would go with this one. I think that you would be fine with either one. M_Fields Quote

fathom Posted March 7, 2008 Posted March 7, 2008 would go with the 783, as well, for all-around. if all i was doing was jigs and plastics, would go with the 844. Quote
Hot n Tot Posted March 8, 2008 Posted March 8, 2008 The rod you described is the IMX MBR783. 6'-6" rated for 1/4 - 3/4 oz lures. I personally wouldn't consider the 844 a good all around rod, but to each their own. Quote
Fishing Doug Posted March 8, 2008 Posted March 8, 2008 My favorite all-purpose rod is the MBR783C IMX. I am still trying to figure out what it can't do, maybe throwing big swimbaits. Agreed. This is my favorite rod paired with a TD-Z. Lot of versatility with this rod. Quote
