Georgia Jeff Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 Hello, I am new to the forum. I currently own a Pinnacle Scion magnesium reel and love it. They don't make them anymore so I was considering buying a Shimano Chronarch MG 50 (very simialar to the Scion). Is this reel really worth $250? Let me tell you a little about myself to help frame the question. I am a weekend angler who only competes in a local river fishing tournament that I put on with about 10 of my friends. I fish hard however, every weekend 7 1/2 months of the year. I teach school so in the summer I fish 2 or three days a week. I have the reel mentioned above, a 2 Cabelas Podigy reels, and 2 Cabelas Tournament ZX reels. I love the Scion and the Prodigy reels, the Tournament ZX reels feel a little cheap but are alright. Is the Shimano worth the $250 price tag. If so, what makes it so much better? Can I expect it to last longer, cast further, etc. I know alot of you guys use there reels, so help me please. Quote

I really like the light reels and this one has been around a while "tried and true". I like it mostly due to the weight and it performs as well as the heavier models in it's price range. It is worth the $250 IMHO, you may be able to find one cheaper on ebay. Quote

Shadcranker Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 Really depends on what you need. If you need more than one more reel, then the Citica for half the priceis a great value; you could get two. If you're looking for a sweet reel to fish all day, the MG is awesome, b/c it's so light. Citica, Curado, and Chronarch are all great. Just depends on the price you are willing to pay. I have an MG and love it. For the $ it is a good value, but I already had most everything else I needed before I stepped up to one. I have three Citicas, around 10 Curados, and one MG to put it in prespective. The Curado is my everyday workhorse. Quote
Big T Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 Are Shimano's worth it? I have two Sytmre's that are really freshwater reels but I use them for inshore saltwater. The oldest on is 5 years old and the only thing I have done to it is wash it off with water and occasionally oil it. Works perfect. So based on that I think they are worth the money. Quote

Super User flechero Posted March 31, 2008 Super User Posted March 31, 2008 The 50 MG's are nice, light reels. They handle very well and cast great. I own 6 of them at the moment. I think they are well worth the money but I value the weight factor higher than a lot of people. You will have to make up your own mind but know this... you can sell it quickly, and recoup most of your money, if you don't like it. For what it's worth I bought 4 of them off ebay stores and paid under $210 delivered to my door. Quote
Ballistik Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 It also depends on what you plan on throwing with it. I use mine to trow weightless senkos and light jigs. But if you dont plan on trowing light tackle save your money and jst get a curado 100. Very Very Smooth and cast great but not as good withthe light stuff. Just my opinion. But if you do get it you surely wont be dissappointed. Drag is on the light side but a $6 Carbontex washer and you gain about 2lbs on the drag and its perfect. Good luck. Quote
PlasticMan Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 I think if you are primarily a weekend angler I would stick to something good quality, but not something that you will have to refinance your house to own. If you wanted to try a Shimano, start out with a Citica. I would not jump right into the 50mg right away. However, if you have the money to spend I would go witht he 50mg. I have owned a couple of them and LOVE them. They are so light and can sling a mile. Quote

IMO Shimano makes the best reels out there. If you really want to spend $250, get the Chronarch. Pretty much, if it has SHIMANO on it, it's an AWESOME reel!! Tight Lines 8-) Quote
Mr.Twister Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 I do own a couple shimano reels, and they're good, for me you can't beat a Diawa. I've NEVER had any issues with the ones I own. I just purchased a new STEEZ baitcaster and a Loomis to go with her. Im stoked about gettin it out on the water as soon as the weather here breaks. For the money though I think you get what you pay for and Either way buy what fits you. I look at a reel purchase like buying a handgun. It needs to feel like an extension of your hand, comfortable and smooth. If it feels good, it will be good. Good Luck........Twista Quote

I see where you are coming from, but the old green Curados are gone anyway, unless you can find them on ebay. When comparing the current models, the Chronarch is a good value vs. the new Curado, if weight matters to you. Personally, it's not a big deal to me. I only own one MG and ten to twelve Curados. The MG is a luxury item for me but still a good value when compared to the other "light reels" in the market. Quote

JMHO Compare the schematics for the 50 Mg and the CU100b. I compared the schematics of both reels and except for a handful of springs, washers and screws, the part #s are all different. They would be the same if they were the same parts. The common washers, springs and such prove that and a lot of those are found throughout the Shimano line. I don't want to argue. I have fished with both for years and they are not the same reels by a long shot. That's only my opinion for what it's worth. I won't fight about it. Folks who study the schematics and fish them can make up their own mind. Ronnie Quote
Georgia Jeff Posted March 31, 2008 Author Posted March 31, 2008 I do like the light weight of the reel. The Scion I own is around 7 ounces and it really seems to make a difference. I fish mostly weightless plastics and lightly weighted worms (1/8th ounce or less). The Scion is on a BPS medium light finesse rod and it is perfect for throwing a weightless trick worm. It is really an awesome set up. Man, I need to be fishing!!!!! Quote
