telecaster Posted March 30, 2008 Posted March 30, 2008 If you were to dedicate a rod reel combo to heavy cover would you go with the 7.0.1 reels? Just thinking about a reel pairing with a MosseybacK 7'1"hev.fast rod I was looking at.I was considering the Curado DHSV7to1 reel. What do you think about that combo for pullin fish out of heavy pads, trees, etc.? Shimano is offering a $50 rebate on that reel and the rod is on the rack from last year, so I can get the rod for 175 and the reel after rebate would be 150.I thought that wasn't to bad. thanxs jim Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted March 30, 2008 Super User Posted March 30, 2008 I would go with the Daiwa Zillion 7.1:1 if it were me. I don't know if you want to spend that much or not. I have used both reels and the Daiwa feels much better than the Curado. Quote
Shadcranker Posted March 30, 2008 Posted March 30, 2008 I am a hard core Shimano posse member (own about 20 mid to higher end reels by them). Only one I wish I hadn't bought is that 200 sized 7:1 reel. First, I think a 7:1 reel is overkill for almost all applications. The onl bait I use it with is a buzzbait, just to get the bait on top ASAP. If you only own a handful of reels, I would not make a burner a priority. 6.3:1 is fine. If you're a cranker, a good 5:1 reel is really necessary, but a burner is not IMHO. Secondly, that 200 size is big and heavy. The gear casing is huge, and unless you have really large hands, it is not comfortable to fish with all day. I love the 100 size in the Curado and Citica. Just my two cents worth, but I would put your money to the high capcity 100 CU reel in the regualr gear ratio. SC Quote
Saladmander Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 I personally like the 200 size Curado. I got a couple Revos, and to me, those things are tiny. It felt like a kids toy in my hand. As far as retrieve speed, I agree with Shadcranker in that a 6.3:1 would be just fine. I have the Curado 200DHSV mounted on a Mossyback 7'3" H/fast and use it for pitching jigs/creature baits and c-rigs. I like the way the 200 balances on that rod. The retrieve speed makes it nice for getting the jig back in to pitch to the next spot and nice for picking up line if you have a decent amount of line out on a c-rig and the bass swims towards you. A lighter reel on that rod just doesn't feel as balanced IMO. I think the combo you want will be great for heavy cover. I almost decided on the 7'1" Mossyback myself. Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted March 31, 2008 Super User Posted March 31, 2008 Get yourself the Calcutta. It's smoother than the Curado and cast much better. I think they are about $180. for the basic model which is much better than the Curado. IMHO... If you have to have a low profile then The Zillion or Curado will be fine. I prefer the Abu Premier though because it's so much lighter. And ditto to what Shadcranker said "Secondly, that 200 size is big and heavy. The gear casing is huge, and unless you have really large hands, it is not comfortable to fish with all day. I love the 100 size in the Curado and Citica." I have big hands and had the 200 Curado until last week when I sold it. Never had a problem with it but there is better out there. Quote

The 200 series was a huge dissapointment for me (and I love Curados). Quote
Super User FishTank Posted March 31, 2008 Super User Posted March 31, 2008 For a high speed reel, I like the Daiwa Zillion. Quote

0119 Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 I dont want any reel speed slower than a 7.1 to 1 ratio anymore. The next cast might be a pitch or a cast, either way I want to get through the unproductive water and back to the boat fast. No other ratio makes buzzbaitng easier either. The water I fish hold just as many snook and tarpon as it does bass, and there isnt any Daiwa that feels it can handle them like the Curado does. Tons of power. Everybody hates the boat anchor the Curado is, one whole ounce bigger than whats already in there hands anyway! Our Dads are shaking their heads cause we wine about a whole heavy ounce. Now their going to make a lighter one, probably made off shore of Japan cheaper and be less of a reel. Quote
telecaster Posted March 31, 2008 Author Posted March 31, 2008 I have a couple of Diawa HST's that are ok , For a relativly inexpensive reel.I also have a 50mg that I love,so I tend to lean towards Shimano when lookin at new reels. The reason I was thinking about a 7to1 is getting the bait up and out of the junk fast, back to the boat. Also to steer fish up and away from the junk fast.Maybe thats overthinking things a little.Primarily the rod/reel will be used pitching and lobbing baits,in and around blowdowns, stumps, etc. One place I fish often has a lot of lilypads,I look for slots and areas to cast into, what I like to do is overcast the spot burn the bait over the pads then let it fall into the slot, when you hook-up in there you have to get the fish up quick, cuz they will just tie you up. I wanna go fishin now thinking about that,we still have ice up here > thanks jim Quote
Olebiker Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 I have a Revo SC 7:1 and find it useless for anything except Senko or plastic worm fishing where I find I need to pick up a lot of slack in a hurry. I tried fishing a spinnerbit with it when I first got it but it required so much torque to retrieve even a 3/8 oz. willowleaf spinnerbit that I gave it up. I have a couple of 6.3:1 Daiwas that I use for topwater, RatLTraps, and all other crankbaits except really deep runners. I use a 5.2:1 for spinnerbaits. I am picking up a couple of Quantum Accurist 6.2:1 reels this afternoon to replace my old Ambassadeur 5000s on my flipping sticks. A local shop has them for $80 and Quantum has a $30 rebate. Quote
