kms399 Posted March 30, 2008 Posted March 30, 2008 I have a couple rods that have my name on them which i would like to remove. my Kistler looks like it is written in like silver pen then coated with epoxy. my St.Croix has like a printed sticker then covered in epoxy. I would like to trade/sell one or two of these. thanks Ken Quote
Super User .RM. Posted March 30, 2008 Super User Posted March 30, 2008 I have a couple rods that have my name on them which i would like to remove. The number one problem with personalizing a rod...... 8-) Use a hair dryer on the hot setting, held far enough away not to over heat the rod blank (300° will soften the rod blank). Then use a single edge razor to carefully slice the epoxy covering the inscriptions. Now using a fingernail, peel the epoxy off of the area. Many times what you think is actual handwriting is in fact a decal. If this is the case you will need to carefully remove the decal and clean up the blank. Here is the rub, if the blanks have a glossy finish on them, when you remove the epoxy covering the inscription area's, then it will most likely remove the layer of blank finish all of this was sitting on, leaving a matte looking area that you will have to re-coat, and I think i'm safe in saying you have no experience in re-coating rod blanks.... My recommendation would be to find a local rod builder, and have it done..... Good Luck & Tight Lines!!!! Quote
Super User flechero Posted March 30, 2008 Super User Posted March 30, 2008 I wouldn't risk ruining them. I may be the exception but removing epoxy or finish isn't something I have seen good results with. If they were my rods, I would probably just sand out a thread's depth and wrap over the name, then add a light coat of finish to permanently cover it up. Truely removing it may be impossible w/o looking like crap. On a different note, if you had rods custom made, they will never sell for what they are worth to you... so unless you are in a bad way financially, I would keep them. You'll probably end up wanting them later. Quote
Super User .RM. Posted March 30, 2008 Super User Posted March 30, 2008 Only one other way would be to cover them up. Mix up some finish and add some (blank color) Taps pigment to the mix and cover it up. I do agree with flechero, if you had rods custom made, they will never sell for what they are worth to you... so unless you are in a bad way financially, I would keep them. You'll probably end up wanting them later. Good Luck & Tight Lines!!!!!! Quote
kms399 Posted March 31, 2008 Author Posted March 31, 2008 I didn't necessarily want my name on these rods. I used to work at gander mountain which included a huge discount on St. Croix and Kistler rods. Unfortunately they write your name on the blank when you order them, I am sure to discourage you from selling them. but what do you do when you realize your crankbait rod is too soft or your dock rod is too long. or you really want to try a carrot stick but the wife is making you sell your stuff to get it ;D Quote
