dmac14 Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 I was wondering what the magnet on the baitcast reels is used for? and which nob is it on the reel? Quote
MSPbass Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 They're used as breaks on the reel spool. Centrifugal brakes work at the begging of the cast when the spool starts spinning so fast. Magnetic breaks work towards the end of the cast to keep your spool rolling smooth as your bait soars off. Magnetic breaks help prevent the line from running over itself - resulting in a bird's nest. To adjust Centrifugal brakes, you have to open up the reel. Magnetic breaks usually have a dial on the non-handle side of the reel. Quote
XbassmasterX Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 I have a question on the Shimano Cudaro baitcasting reel. Does it have magentic brakes or do you have to un screw it and take it apart to change the braking? thanks I have only had baitcasters with magentic braking and would not want the hassel of taking apart the reel in the middle of a lake in a boat and watch everyone except me catching fish :-/ Quote

0119 Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 No the Curado along with all but the cheapest Shimano reels, has a centrifugal brake system. Ive never found it a hassle to open while fishing though, theres an easy access latch to open the reels sideplate. I dont think I even bother to change it anyway and keep it on 2 or 3 brake pins 'on'. Any fine tuning can be done by adjusting the cast control knob. Quote

Initially you will need to try different settings, but once you have the reel "dialed in" to your preferred setting, no further adjustments to the centrifugal brakes are required. Most of my Shimano reels are set with two brakes on, but I have found that four works better for me on a couple of reels that I only use for certain techniques. 8-) Quote
