I bought a Powell 765 today at a local shop. Took the rod out for its first journey, and I managed to snap it. It was on a fish only 2 pounds and I was pulling him to out of the cover. What you are meant to do with a flipping stick. I think I just got a lemon. Do you guys think they will replace it free of charge or make me pay the 35 to replace it?

A 5 power rod snapping on a 2lb fish..... :)

Almost sounds like line wrapped around the tip on hook-set.. :-?

The only way your going to find out for sure is to contact them... 8-)

Hopefully they will replace it for free. Worst case scenario is you have to pay $35, but that would be weak.

I had a Dobyns crankbait rod break last week while flippin a 2 pounder into the boat. I'm waiting on the verdict of how they're going to work the warranty claim. It was only the second time I had ever used the rod and maybe the 3rd or 4th fish I'd caught with it.

Well, I have learned not to EVER buy a Powell or Dobyns.  Just starting to think these are trumped up expensive rods for rich guys that only fish one week per year.  LOL.

I brand new rod snapped the first time out on the first fish caught? Could happen to any rod, reguardless of mfg., but some how I think you would have a new rod free of charge from St. Croix,Shimano, Fenwick, or G.Loomis, heck even Bass Pro Shops would give you a new rod, no fee, no questions asked.

Rob, aren't you a rich guy? I thought you were buying a mansion in Wisconsin or something?

When I used Rogue rods I snapped one of them on a 2 lb fish. They replaced it, but it broke while I was trying to show a guy how nice they

were.

I have been using All Star rods ever since they were bought out by Shakespeare and so far I have not broke one. I have busted a few tips on my Pitchin' rods when I am sticking them down in the water to

free a snag, but that is it.

I wouldn't jump off the Dobyns or Powell boats just yet. I've owned several Powells in the past that were great rods. The Dobyns I broke was probably due to a weak spot in the blank, which does happen from time to time. I expect the replacement rod will perform just fine.

It happens from time to time with all rod companies. At least you didnt

have to pay full retail to replace it. What does thier warranty say

about breakage?

The usual....they'll inspect it after they receive it and let me know what its going to take to replace it. I had to send in $20 to cover them shipping me another one. I dont expect to pay anything more than the shipping, the rod was almost brand new and they'll be able to tell it.

I doubt it can be fixed, it broke about 9-10 inches down from the tip between the 3rd and 4th guide.

I have quite a few All Stars (IM10s and American Classics) and they have performed great.  I have an American Classic 7'6" H/XF flippin' stick and I once used it to pull my Chevy out of a ditch.   Seriously, though, it's a tough rod.

JT, a mansion no, a camper/trailer is in the works though. Rich, definately not. It will be a fun place to run away to for a day or two now and again. Hope you can come up. Not a sure thing yet. Just think JT, it will be like Milan away from Milan. LOL.

Not picking on anyone intentionally.  Just seems they are very proud of their products, and ask a lot for them.  Then if there is a problem, it costs money to have them replaced.  The only rod that I have broken too recently was a Fenwick, replaced free and no questions asked.  It was a few years old too.

Not picking on anyone intentionally.  Just seems they are very proud of their products, and ask a lot for them.  Then if there is a problem, it costs money to have them replaced.  The only rod that I have broken too recently was a Fenwick, replaced free and no questions asked.  It was a few years old too.

I have 4 Powells and they are great rods for the price.  Listing at $169, they are mid-range in price.  In Powell's opinion, did the rod break due to negligence on your part?  I'm not saying you were negligent, but is this what Powell stated?  Their warranty states that they will replace a rod for free unless they determine that defects in materials and workmanship were not the cause.  An excerpt from the warranty is below.

The Lifetime original owner warranty applies to Bass rods and for the original owner only. Powell reserves the right to repair or to replace the rod for a warranty fee of $35.00, and Powell reserves the right to make that determination. If the rod breaks because of a defect in workmanship or materials, then Powell will replace or repair the rod for no charge. Rods that become damaged due to normal wear, accident, misuse or neglect may be repaired or replaced, and Powell reserves the right to make that determination. We will advise you of the cost before proceeding.

Frog, I contacted Powell Rods myself about your post. Keith Bryan from Powell quickly contacted me back regarding your problem. He tried to respond directly on the forum but had trouble logging on. He asked if I would forward the followig message. And I Quote " If this person broke a rod the first time then he shouldn't pay a dime, no questions asked. If he sent it back to us and if there was no explanation from him detailing this experience then a charge would apply. It's also possible that we made an error, we are just people but in any event, he should not have to pay, period. So I'm not sure where this breakdown is. Typically customers will talk with us and do their diligence before posting something on a site because the entire facts may not be in play in this persons unfortunate experience. Have him call me at Powell. Keith Bryan 415-382-9745"

:) Cool move! He does owe you a cold one. I wouldn't think that a reputable rod company like Powell would charge for a replacement rod that broke so shortly after the purchase unless it were blatant abuse.

It couldn't hurt.  The worst thing that can happen is that you're still out the 40 bucks.  Maybe they'll reimburse you.
