MSPbass Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 Hello all, I'm going to invest in a new set up and it's going to be the Pflueger Patriarch or Abu Garcia Revo STX. But here's the thing, I'm a little crazy and my future rigs will all be the same brand. So that means, if/when I start getting technique specific, I'd probably go with quality rods and Presidents or Revo SCs. I've been planning on a Patriarch since last fall and have a couple Pfluegers now, but I had a Revo STX in my hands last week and, quite frankly, it turned me on a little. I'm reading nothing less than stellar reviews on the STX too. So it's sort of a monkeywrench in my plan. (If all my problems were so "difficult".) Just wondering what folks thought about these 2 lines? Quote
Super User MALTESE FALCON Posted March 21, 2008 Super User Posted March 21, 2008 I can't speak for the Patriach, but the STX is a fantastic reel. I love all my Revos. Falcon Quote
PezJunkie Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 I currently own both reels have had my STX since Christmas and just picked up the Patriarch a couple of days ago. Took the Patriarch out with the STX yesterday and hands down Patriarch all they way I found my self using it alot more than my STX. For further purchases I think I am going to keep buying Pflueger reels. Quote
JigNBig Posted March 22, 2008 Posted March 22, 2008 hmmmm...the patriarch is a pflueger. rule that one out. i would actually get the SX and save 50 bucks. there is little to no mechanical difference just different trim and all. Quote
Super User Micro Posted March 22, 2008 Super User Posted March 22, 2008 i would actually get the SX and save 50 bucks. there is little to no mechanical difference just different trim and all. The STX has the Infini II spool, which disengages from the drive gears. The SX does not. No major difference in performance, though. STX versus top-end Pflueger. Hmmmm. I'm a loyal Revo guy, but the Pfluegers are nice. If you want a super drag, go with the Revo. If a very effective brake is more important, go with the Pflueger. You get a great reel either way. Quote
MSPbass Posted March 22, 2008 Author Posted March 22, 2008 "the patriarch is a pflueger. rule that one out." That cracked me up. I know some folks have had bad experiences with Pfluegers, but I have not. I learned to fish a baitcaster on a round Trion and I love my President spinning reel. I know I'd be happy with either reel, but I was wondering what others thought. I appreciate the input. Quote
Super User David P Posted March 22, 2008 Super User Posted March 22, 2008 I haven't fished the Patriarch , but have fished the STX Just what Micro said... If you need the drag, go with the STX, if not, it's a toss up IMO. Quote
HomersTomaco Posted March 22, 2008 Posted March 22, 2008 look for a johnny morris on sale instead of a patriarch, its basically the same thing Quote
JT Bagwell Posted March 23, 2008 Posted March 23, 2008 hmmmm...the patriarch is a pflueger. rule that one out. You ever owned a Pflueger? They are both owned by the same company now. I personally have not used either reel yet, but plan on trying both if I have the opportunity. In reference to Pflueger reels, I have been using them several seasons now and have not had any trouble. They are very smooth casting and reeling and have been very dependable. JT Bagwell Quote
0119 Posted March 23, 2008 Posted March 23, 2008 Made by the same company? Are you saying that ABU is now owned by the conglomerate that owns and makes Ryobi, Shakesphere, Phelueger, Pinnacle, Silstar, Penn and on and on. Or that they now own ABU? I thought it was only Shakespheres fishing line that had been sold, per federal court order...... Quote

I know nothing about Ryobi, Silstar and Pinnacle, but the other brands you mentioned (including Abu Garcia) are all owned by the same company. It is called Jarden Corp. JT Bagwell Quote
0119 Posted March 23, 2008 Posted March 23, 2008 Is Pure Fishing also part of that company or just ABU ? Quote
Super User Micro Posted March 23, 2008 Super User Posted March 23, 2008 Is Pure Fishing also part of that company or just ABU ? Pure Fishing, which owns Stren, Berkely, Fenwick, Abu, among others, and Shakespeare, which owns Pflueger, All Star, among others, are both owned by Jarden. Quote
MSPbass Posted March 24, 2008 Author Posted March 24, 2008 Chevy and Cadillac are owned by the same company. I believe that same company owns Hummer and Daewoo too. So all that Jardin/Pure Fishing/Shakespeare stuff doesn't worry me much. The whole world is probably owned by ten corporations, once you boil everything down, anyhow. I have looked at those Johnny Morris reels at BPS. The Elite is more pricey than the Patriarch! So that doesn't help. BPS doesn't even look to carry the Patriarch either. Funny. Earlier, someone said "you get a great real either way". That was helpful. I'm sticking with Pflueger. Now, what do people think about Fenwick vs. All Star? Just kidding. Quote
